Support for Bound Book Format (.bbf) archives
#1568
Firstly, thank you all for making LANraragi possible. I've been using it for months, and it's added a ton of value to my NAS setup.
I was wondering if anyone here has heard of the Bound Book Format (.bbf). I first discovered it from this reddit post. I’d like to request adding support for it, and I'm happy to try and contribute to the code if it sounds like a good idea. It’s an open-source binary container format specifically designed for comics, manga, and artbooks, and it solves a lot of the pain points of using general-purpose archives like CBZ or CBR.
Here are some reasons why it might be a good fit for LANraragi:
Native Metadata: BBF has built-in key/value metadata. A plugin could automatically pull these embedded tags and map them directly to LANraragi’s Namespace system on import—no external ComicInfo.xml files needed.
Storage Efficiency: It natively deduplicates identical image assets via hashing. This is huge for saving space on repeated pages (like scanlator credits, group promos, or recurring spreads) across large libraries.
Built-in Chapters: It supports MKV-style nesting for volumes and chapters. The archive retains logical breaks, which could eventually be used by the LANraragi reader UI.
Fast Reading: It supports an index-first layout (petrification), meaning it can be read extremely quickly without needing to fully unpack the archive.
For integration, there's already a C++ CLI tool (bbfmux) that LANraragi could use to extract assets to temporary folders, exactly like it currently handles zip, rar, and 7z.
You can check out the repo here, and the python bindings here. Thank you for your consideration!
