Summary

Fixes #1634.

ensure_model() in backend/app/utils/model_downloader.py streamed the download straight to the model's final path and left the partial file there on failure so it could resume. Everything else decides a model is installed with os.path.exists() on that same path — GET /models/status and the SigLIP2 loaders in utils/images.py, utils/videos.py and utils/semantic_labels.py. So an interrupted download (dropped connection, laptop sleep, app closed) left a partial file that was reported as installed and then failed to load with INVALID_PROTOBUF; for the semantic bundle the Model Manager showed it as up to date with no download button.

A dropped connection also skipped the retry logic: a server closing the connection mid-file raises httpx.RemoteProtocolError, which the retry loop did not catch, so the first drop ended the download.

Changes

  • Download to a <model>.part file, resume from it with an HTTP Range request, and only os.replace() it onto the final path after the SHA-256 matches. The final path now exists only for a complete, verified model, so os.path.exists()-based status and the loaders can never see a half-written file as installed. No changes were needed in those callers.
  • Retry on httpx.TransportError (the base class covering RemoteProtocolError, network errors and timeouts) in addition to HTTPStatusError, so a mid-file connection drop is retried and resumed instead of ending the download.
  • On a checksum mismatch the .part file is discarded; a 416 Range Not Satisfiable discards the stale partial and restarts.

Tests

New backend/tests/test_model_downloader.py spins up a local HTTP server and covers:

  • successful download → installed and verified, no .part left behind
  • connection closed early → final path is not created (not reported as installed), partial kept under .part for resume
  • RemoteProtocolError on the first attempt → retried and completed
  • resume continues from an existing .part (server returns 206, only the remaining bytes)
  • checksum mismatch → rejected, nothing installed

Verification

  • pytest tests/test_model_downloader.py → 5 passed
  • pytest tests/test_models.py → 91 passed (no regression)
  • black (88 cols) clean; ruff clean

Before this change the repro in the issue reported installed: true for a partial file; after it, the final path is absent (installed: false) and the bytes are preserved as .part.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Model downloads can resume after interruptions, reducing the need to restart from the beginning.
    • Downloads are checked for integrity before installation, and incomplete or invalid files are not installed.
    • Temporary download data is retained for retryable failures and cleared when a download fails validation.

… reported as installed

ensure_model() wrote the stream straight to the model's final path and left the
partial file there on failure, so os.path.exists() (GET /models/status and the
SigLIP2 loaders) reported a half-written file as installed and loading it failed
with INVALID_PROTOBUF. A dropped connection also raised httpx.RemoteProtocolError,
which the retry loop did not catch, so the first drop ended the download.

- Stream to <model>.part, resume from it with a Range request, and only
os.replace() it onto the final path after the SHA-256 matches, so the final
path exists only for a complete, verified model.
- Retry on httpx.TransportError (covers RemoteProtocolError, network and timeout
  errors) in addition to HTTPStatusError.
- Add tests using a local server that serves fully, closes the connection early,
or honours Range, covering download, interruption, retry, resume and checksum.

Walkthrough

Model downloads now use .part files, resume interrupted transfers, retry transport and HTTP status errors, and install files only after SHA-256 verification. Tests cover complete downloads, interruptions, retries, resumption, and hash mismatches.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title says models are downloaded to a .part file so interrupted downloads are not reported as installed. The raw summary shows this is the main change: downloads go to a .part file, the final path is written only after SHA-256 verification, and partial data is handled on retry and on hash mismatch. The title matches the changeset and the objectives. It names the issue number (#1634), which is acceptable. The title is 98 characters, which is longer than the usual short title, but it remains a single clear sentence.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1634 requires safe handling of interrupted downloads and retries for connection drops. ensure_model() now writes to <model>.part, resumes with Range, verifies SHA-256, and uses os.replace() only after verification. It removes stale final files, removes .part after a checksum mismatch, and handles HTTP 416 by restarting. RETRYABLE_EXCEPTIONS includes httpx.TransportError, which covers RemoteProtocolError. The new downloader tests cover successful installation, early connection closure, retry, resume, and checksum rejection.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes are limited to the downloader implementation and regression tests for issue #1634. The tests directly verify final-path status, partial-file retention, retry behavior, resume behavior, and checksum handling. No unrelated product behavior or files are changed.

Add a test for the HTTP 416 restart path.

The PR adds explicit 416 handling in _download_to_part, and _FullHandler already returns 416 for out-of-range offsets. No test reaches that branch. A regression in the discard-and-restart logic would not fail the suite. A test with a .part file larger than BODY covers it.

Annotate function signatures and return types in the new test module.

The new helpers, handler methods, fixture, and test functions have no parameter or return annotations. Examples are do_GET(self), log_message(self, *args), _serve(handler), model_env(tmp_path, monkeypatch), and _set_url(url: str). Add annotations, for example -> None, handler: type[http.server.BaseHTTPRequestHandler] with return type http.server.ThreadingHTTPServer, and tmp_path: Path, monkeypatch: pytest.MonkeyPatch with return type str.

Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Bound the HTTP 416 restart to requests that sent a Range header.

The 416 branch recurses into _download_to_part without checking existing_size. If a server returns 416 to a request with no Range header, existing_size is already 0 after the first discard. The function then recurses again with the same request. Each level opens a new HTTP request. The loop stops only when Python raises RecursionError, which is not in RETRYABLE_EXCEPTIONS, so the retry loop never handles it.

Restart only when the 416 answers a ranged request. Otherwise, fall through to raise_for_status(). That raises HTTPStatusError, which the retry loop in ensure_model already handles.
