Fixes #10488
Fixes #10489
Fixes #10490
Fixes #10491

What changed

#10488 - nested numeric arrays in HTTP params. toMap(true) leaves a long[]/double[] at any depth of the request, and only the top level of a parameter was turned back into a list. A nested one was stored as the primitive array, so =, .type() and GROUP BY saw a different value than for the same list as a literal. The nested arrays are now unwrapped at the one write choke point (MutableDocument.putProperty, Type.unwrapNestedPrimitiveArrays): declared and undeclared properties agree, nothing is copied unless something is replaced, and the batch-of-vectors fast path (top-level arrays, UNWIND $batch ... row.embedding) is untouched. long[] elements narrow to Integer where they fit, as the JSON scalar parser does, so GROUP BY puts equal maps in one group.

#10489 - DATETIME string with an offset. A string with a non-zero offset or a zone is now stored as the UTC wall clock of the instant it names, like an OffsetDateTime/ZonedDateTime already was, so HTTP/SQL and Bolt/Java store one value for one instant. Z, +00:00 and offset-less strings keep their wall clock, so the Cypher datetime() round trip (#4125) is unchanged. date() and .asDatetime() read a string the same way (the existing contract is that reading answers what writing stores); a DATE still keeps the day written. Behavior change: existing values are not rewritten. The bulk path (GraphBatch) still rebases onto the database zone, which is the same value for a UTC database; reconciling that third rule is left alone.

#10490 - CREATE INDEX in a transaction that wrote to the indexed type. The shared build scanned the caller's pending pages plus the committed ones and queued one entry per record on the caller's transaction, so a rollback emptied an index whose component is committed on its own. The build is now two steps (IndexBuilder.buildCreatedIndex, which every sharing call site goes through): the committed state is indexed in a transaction of its own with the caller's transaction set aside, chunked like any other build; then IndexBuildCallerChanges queues on the caller's transaction only what the caller created, updated or deleted in the bucket, deciding per record from its committed and pending versions. Applies to every family and to the type, bucket and super-type propagation entry points. The test that pinned the old vector count (Issue10450...updateInTheIndexedTypeStillJoinsTheTransaction) now expects the committed records.

#10491 - vertex written right after a type joins a Graph Analytical View. The commit listener routed a written vertex by coversVertexType, which since #10212 also answers "does the CSR hold this type yet". For an existing type attached with ALTER TYPE ... SUPERTYPE +Base the answer was no, so the listener dropped the vertex, and the rebuild that answer dispatches (from inside the writing transaction) scanned before the commit. Vertices are now routed by the filter, as edges already were (routeWrittenVertexType); the held/not-held verdict is still taken at the first write, and coversVertexType alone decides whether the view is served.

Also fixes Issue5606BuilderStateCarryOverTest, red on main since builtInCallerTransaction was added (an outcome of create(), not a setting).

Verification

  • New: Issue10488NestedNumericArrayParamTest, Issue10488NestedArrayParamHttpIT, Issue10489DateTimeOffsetStringTest, Issue10490IndexBuildRollbackKeepsCommittedRecordsTest (LSM_TREE, UNIQUE, FULL_TEXT, BY ITEM, HASH; insert/update/delete, commit and rollback, super-type propagation, bucket builder), Issue10491ViewVertexTypeAttachedAfterBuildTest (reproduced 6 of 8 before the fix, 12 reps each).
  • Updated: the Issue8090... tests that pinned the offset-dropping rule.
  • Engine slice (schema, index, database, olap view, serializer, utility, sql executor/method/function): 8892 tests, no failure besides the Issue5606 guard fixed here.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved date/time parsing for offset-based values, providing consistent UTC conversion across SQL, schema, and application inputs.
    • Fixed handling of nested primitive numeric arrays in document properties and HTTP parameters, including querying, grouping, and type detection.
    • Ensured index creation correctly preserves committed records while applying transaction changes on commit or rollback.
    • Improved incremental analytical view updates when vertex subtypes are added or changed.
  • Tests

    • Added regression coverage for date/time conversion, nested arrays, index transactions, and analytical view updates.

…lists, DATETIME strings with an offset stored as UTC, CREATE INDEX in a writing transaction keeps the committed records, a vertex written after a type joined a view is not lost

- #10488: a long[]/double[] nested in a list or map parameter (what the HTTP params parser leaves at any depth) is stored as the list it stands for, like the same value as a literal or from Java. Done at the one write choke point (MutableDocument.putProperty), so declared and undeclared properties agree and the batch-of-vectors fast path is untouched.
- #10489: a DATETIME string with a non-zero offset or a zone is stored as the UTC wall clock of the instant, like an OffsetDateTime/ZonedDateTime. Z, +00:00 and offset-less strings keep their wall clock (#4125). The date() function and asDatetime() read a string the same way; a DATE still keeps the day written.
- #10490: a CREATE INDEX that joins the caller's transaction indexes the committed records in a transaction of its own and queues on the caller's transaction only what the caller created, updated or deleted, so a rollback no longer empties the index and a UNIQUE index no longer accepts a duplicate of a committed key.
- #10491: the commit listener routed a written vertex by whether the CSR held its type, so the first vertex written to a type attached to a listed one after the scan was dropped and the rebuild it triggered scanned before it committed. Vertices are now routed by the filter, like edges.

Review of PR 10497

I read the diff and did not build or run the tests. The PR bundles four fixes (#10488 to #10491). Each has a focused regression test and the javadoc explains the reasoning well. Findings are below, most important first.

#10490 - two-step index build

  • The approach is sound. The committed state is indexed in its own transaction, then IndexBuildCallerChanges queues only the caller's creates, updates and deletes. Deciding from the committed and pending versions of each record handles create-then-update and delete-then-recreate.
  • Partial build on failure. The committed phase commits in its own transaction before the caller's reconciliation runs. If IndexBuildCallerChanges.apply throws (for example a unique violation from a pending record), the committed entries stay while the caller's transaction rolls back. Please check that the callers' guard (the post-linkage cleanup in TypeIndexBuilder and propagateSuperTypeIndexes) drops or rebuilds the index on this path. A test would help, such as a pending duplicate on a UNIQUE index, then asserting the index state after the failure.
  • Concurrency. The status flips to AVAILABLE before the build. Please confirm that a concurrent writer committing to the same bucket between the committed scan and apply cannot double-add or miss an entry.
  • Memory. Document[] committed holds every written record in memory, which could be large for a big uncommitted transaction. Acceptable for DDL, but worth a comment. getWrittenRecordIdsIn also builds a set and then copies it to a list, which is unnecessary.

#10488 - nested primitive array unwrapping in putProperty

  • Hot path cost. Type.unwrapNestedPrimitiveArrays now runs on every putProperty. Scalars return immediately, but any list or map value is walked recursively, and when a replacement is found the walk happens twice (holds... then rebuild...). That is an O(n) cost on every write, including writes that do not come from HTTP. Consider unwrapping only at the HTTP params boundary (PostCommandHandler), or measure it on a large embedded list and note the result in the PR.
  • Coverage. Only long[] and double[] are handled. That is fine if toMap(true) produces only those two, but a comment saying so would prevent drift.
  • Copy semantics. A container holding a replacement is copied, so a caller that keeps a reference to its own list will see a different instance stored. This happens only when arrays are present, so it is acceptable.

#10489 - DATETIME strings with an offset stored as UTC

  • This is a behaviour change with no migration, so old and new rows will disagree for the same input. The PR description says so. Please also add a release-note or docs line.
  • The bulk path (GraphBatch) now has a third rule (rebase to the database zone). A follow-up issue would stop it being forgotten.
  • Nit: the switch in dropZone uses the old colon form with a no-op default. An if or a switch expression would read lighter.

#10491 - Graph Analytical View vertex routing

  • Routing by schema alone is consistent with edges. routeWrittenVertexType calls holdsJoinedVertexType(type) and discards the result, which is documented but surprising in a method named route.... A clearer name or an explicit helper would help.
  • This runs in the commit-listener path, so please confirm holdsJoinedVertexType is cheap for repeat writes to the same type.

Tests and conventions

  • Coverage is good. The new Issue10488, 10489, 10490 and 10491 tests plus the HTTP IT follow existing patterns. Please make sure they avoid raw wall-clock assertions and hardcoded ports per CLAUDE.md, and that the IT uses getServerHttpUrl.
  • I did not see a test for the failure-after-committed-phase path described above.
  • No new dependencies. Imports and final usage look consistent.

Overall this is a solid set of fixes. My main requests are to confirm the failure-path cleanup for the two-step index build, and to reconsider or measure the per-write cost of the unwrapping in putProperty.

- #10490: a test for a pending duplicate of a committed key on a UNIQUE index (the failure path of the two-step build leaves a consistent state), comments on the memory cost and on why no writer can slip between the two steps.
- #10488: the scan of a nested container tests the scalars first (about 0.5 us for a list of 1536 floats), and the javadoc says which shapes are replaced and why.
- #10489: dropZone reads as two ifs instead of a switch with a no-op default.
- #10491: the routing of a written vertex and the verdict taken the first time its type is met are two methods.

Thanks for the review. Addressed in the last push:

Not changed: the copy of a container that holds a replacement (documented, only when arrays are present).

Review

Overall this is a well-reasoned PR. Comments are detailed and tests are included for each of the four issues. I reviewed the main-source diff; a few points are worth a look.

#10488 (Type.unwrapNestedPrimitiveArrays)

  • It runs on every putProperty, so each write now does a full recursive walk of list and map values. Scalars are checked first, which helps, but a large LIST of lists of floats pays an O(n) scan per write. Consider a @Tag("benchmark") check or a short-circuit.
  • The recursion has no depth limit. A deeply nested params payload could be a problem. The JSON parser may already bound this, so please confirm.
  • Only long[] and double[] are handled, and the Javadoc says JSONArray must stay in sync. A test tying the two together would stop them drifting.
  • Rebuilt sets lose their original type (a TreeSet becomes a LinkedHashSet). Minor.

#10489 (DATETIME offset)

  • This is a user-visible behavior change: new writes differ from existing stored values. It needs a release-notes or upgrade-docs entry.
  • Three offset rules now coexist. For a non-UTC database the bulk path and the SQL path store different values for the same string. That is acknowledged and deferred, so please make sure a follow-up issue exists.
  • The OffsetPolicy enum is a clear improvement over the boolean.

#10490 (IndexBuildCallerChanges)

  • The design is sound: index the committed state in its own transaction, then reconcile the caller's pending writes per record.
  • committed[] holds one Document per write in the bucket. This is documented, but a large uncommitted transaction followed by CREATE INDEX can use a lot of heap. Processing in chunks would bound it.
  • Please confirm tests cover delete-then-recreate in the same slot, and a unique-index collision between pending and committed data. The latter surfaces at the caller's commit rather than at CREATE INDEX, so a test should pin that.

#10491 (GAV): no concerns beyond the new test.

Style (CLAUDE.md): imports and final usage look right, and I saw no System.out. Please confirm no new test asserts on raw elapsed time.

Main requests: the perf check for #10488 and the memory bound for #10490.

- #10490: the caller's writes are reconciled in chunks of IndexBuilder.BUILD_BATCH_SIZE, so the committed versions held in memory are bounded by the chunk; a test writes more than one chunk. The test of a pending duplicate of a committed key now pins where it is refused (the caller's commit) and that the index left is complete.
- #10488: a test ties the arrays the request parser leaves in a value to the two shapes the unwrapper replaces.
- #10489, #10488, #10490, #10491: entries in docs/release-26.11.1.md.

Review summary: the four fixes are well-reasoned and each has regression tests. Suggestions: (1) #10490 - confirm a test injects a failure in the caller-changes step (IndexBuildCallerChanges.apply) for TypeIndexBuilder, BucketIndexBuilder and super-type propagation, since committed entries are already committed by then; (2) #10490 - add a UNIQUE case where the caller deletes a committed row and inserts another with the same key before CREATE INDEX, with commit and rollback; (3) #10488 - the unwrap is only in MutableDocument.putProperty, please verify map-based setters, builders and UPDATE CONTENT/MERGE with nested params funnel through it; (4) #10488 - test a long[] element outside int range (mixed Integer/Long) for equality and GROUP BY; (5) the buildCreatedIndex Javadoc in IndexBuilder has a line well over the 160 column limit; (6) #10489 silently changes stored values for non-UTC offset clients - documented in release notes, a temporary opt-out flag may be worth considering; (7) confirm the new HTTP IT uses BaseGraphServerTest/getServerHttpUrl and that the repeated-run Issue10491 test is tagged slow if long. No security concerns found. Overall good, pending 1-4.

… index holds for it

A record updated before a CREATE INDEX and again after it was diffed, by the second update, against the committed buffer, so the entry the reconciliation had queued for the intermediate value stayed in the index. After reconciling a record the transaction wrote, the indexed state of the record is recorded as the diff source of its next update (DocumentIndexer.snapshotAfterBuild): the new index from the pending record, every other index from the diff source it already had. Covers a committed record and one the transaction created, and an index that already existed.

Review

Overall this is a well-reasoned set of four fixes. The docs, the Javadoc on the invariants, and the per-issue regression tests (Issue10488..., 10489..., 10490..., 10491...) are thorough. I read the main-code diff; I did not run the tests. Notes below, none blocking.

#10490 index build (highest risk, most worth a second look)

  • IndexBuilder.buildCreatedIndex now commits the committed-state entries in their own transaction while the caller's transaction is still open. If step 2 (IndexBuildCallerChanges.apply) throws, those entries are already durable. The Javadoc says the callers drop the component on failure. Please confirm there is a test that forces a failure in step 2 and checks the index is dropped and not left half-populated.
  • IndexBuilder.java: the Javadoc has a run-on sentence ("...a chunk at a time. A failure in the second step leaves..."). It reads like a missing paragraph break, so please wrap it.
  • snapshotAfterBuild falls back to baseline = pending on IllegalStateException. This is explained in a comment, but it can hide a stale snapshot, so a debug log would help.
  • getWrittenRecordIdsIn copies the LinkedHashSet into an ArrayList. For a large caller transaction that is a second O(n) allocation, and the chunking in apply only bounds the committed documents. This is fine for DDL, but you could return the set or iterate it directly.

#10488 Type.unwrapNestedPrimitiveArrays in MutableDocument.putProperty

  • This runs on every property write. It is allocation-free when nothing is replaced, but it is a full recursive walk of nested lists and maps, so a large list of maps pays O(size) on every set. The scalar-first short-circuit helps. A quick micro-benchmark on a document with a big embedded list would confirm the cost is negligible.
  • rebuildWithoutPrimitiveArrays normalizes any Map to a LinkedHashMap, so a TreeMap or an immutable map loses its type. That is probably acceptable, but it is worth stating in the Javadoc.
  • The recursion has no cycle guard. This is not realistic for request-derived data, but putProperty accepts arbitrary Java values.

#10489 DATETIME offset

#10491 Graph Analytical View

  • DeltaCollector.isRelevant now calls meetWrittenVertexType for every written vertex. The Javadoc says a repeat write costs a map lookup. This is on the commit hot path, so please confirm that holds, including the getTypeOrNull call that happens before the cache check.

Style (CLAUDE.md)

  • I found no System.out and no new dependencies.
  • The new classes follow the conventions (final params, imported types).
  • Please double-check that none of the new tests assert on raw elapsed time, and that the HTTP IT derives its port via getServerHttpUrl. I did not see violations.

Nice work on keeping the fixes at single choke points.

- #10490: failures injected in the reconciliation step through the progress callback, for the type builder and the bucket builder (the index is dropped, a retry succeeds); a UNIQUE index over a deleted and reinserted key, commit and rollback.
- #10488: every path that assigns a property (set, set(Map), fromMap, UPDATE MERGE, UPDATE CONTENT, INSERT CONTENT) stores the nested list as a list; a list holding a long beyond the int range equals the literal and groups with it.
- IndexBuilder: a javadoc line over the column limit rewrapped.

Third round, in the last push (tests and a javadoc line, no behavior change):

  1. Failure in the reconciliation step: aFailureWhileQueueingTheCallersRecordsDropsTheTypeIndexAndAllowsARetry and ...DropsTheBucketIndexAndAllowsARetry raise a failure from the progress callback on a record only the caller wrote, which is called from IndexBuildCallerChanges.apply: the builder drops the index (nothing left on the type) and a second create() builds a complete one. The super-type propagation has no callback to inject through; it shares the same guard and the pending-duplicate test covers its commit-time refusal.
  2. UNIQUE, delete then reinsert the same key before CREATE INDEX: aUniqueIndexOverADeletedAndReinsertedKeyFollowsTheOutcomeOfTheTransaction, commit (the new row answers the key, 3 entries) and rollback (the committed row answers it, 3 entries, a duplicate is refused).
  3. Setters: all of them end in putProperty (set in every arity, set(Map), merge which calls set(Map), fromMap, and so UPDATE ... MERGE, UPDATE ... CONTENT, INSERT ... CONTENT); everyPathThatAssignsAPropertyStoresTheNestedListAsAList exercises each.
  4. long beyond the int range: aNestedListWithALongBeyondTheIntRangeEqualsTheLiteralAndGroupsWithIt ([5000000000, 1] as a parameter, equal to the literal, one group).
  5. Column limit: the line in the IndexBuilder#buildCreatedIndex javadoc is rewrapped.
  6. Opt-out flag for The same instant with a +02:00 offset is stored as 03:04:05 from a String and as 01:04:05 from an OffsetDateTime, so HTTP and Bolt write different DATETIME values #10489: not added. The new rule is the one the typed paths already follow, the old one lost the instant, and a flag would keep two stored meanings alive for the same input; the migration note is in docs/release-26.11.1.md and the manual.
  7. IT and test tags: Issue10488NestedArrayParamHttpIT extends BaseGraphServerTest and builds its URL with getServerHttpUrl. The repeated-run Issue10491 test runs in about 5 seconds for all its parameterized cases, so it stays in the regular lane.

Review (engine changes reviewed; the diff was large, so I did not trace every test). Solid overall: root causes are well explained, each fix has a regression test, and the code follows CLAUDE.md conventions.

Points to check

  1. IndexBuildCallerChanges.readDocument for records the caller deleted: it assumes lookupByRID(rid, true) throws RecordNotFoundException for a record deleted in the active tx. If it returns the committed copy instead, pending equals before, the record is treated as a no-diff update, and its entries stay in the index. Please confirm a delete-only case is tested for each index family.
  2. Failure in step 2: if IndexBuildCallerChanges.apply fails, the committed entries remain until the caller's cleanup drops the component. A test forcing that failure and asserting the index is gone would lock it in.
  3. UNIQUE index: a duplicate between a pending record and a committed one only surfaces at the caller's commit, not at CREATE INDEX. Probably fine; worth a test or doc line.
  4. Hot path in MutableDocument.putProperty: unwrapNestedPrimitiveArrays runs on every property write. Scalar-first helps, but lists of lists/maps and large maps are fully walked each time. A quick @Tag("benchmark") check on a large nested list would settle it.
  5. Map/Set copies become LinkedHashMap/LinkedHashSet. Low risk, since only HTTP-parsed input is affected.
  6. DATETIME change (The same instant with a +02:00 offset is stored as 03:04:05 from a String and as 01:04:05 from an OffsetDateTime, so HTTP and Bolt write different DATETIME values #10489): documented, good. GraphBatch still rebases onto the database zone (GraphBatch bulk path rebases an offset-bearing DATETIME string onto the database zone, while Type.convert stores the UTC wall clock #10498), so two write paths disagree on non-UTC databases. Keep GraphBatch bulk path rebases an offset-bearing DATETIME string onto the database zone, while Type.convert stores the UTC wall clock #10498 tracked.
  7. DeltaCollector.isRelevant calls meetWrittenVertexType for its side effect inside a predicate. A comment or rename would help.

Style and tests

  • AssertJ style and per-issue test names are good.
  • IndexBuilder.buildCreatedIndex gained a database parameter. Check that no other callers or modules use the old signature.
  • The Issue5606 fix is a welcome drive-by.

No security concerns found. Nothing blocking apart from confirming point 1.

Review of #10497

I read the diff of the main engine changes. I did not build the project or run any tests. The root-cause fixes look well reasoned and the Javadoc explains the "why" clearly. Comments below, most important first.

Behaviour and correctness

  1. The same instant with a +02:00 offset is stored as 03:04:05 from a String and as 01:04:05 from an OffsetDateTime, so HTTP and Bolt write different DATETIME values #10489 is a visible behaviour change (existing data is not rewritten). Old rows written with an offset keep their wall clock, and new rows store UTC, so one column can hold two conventions. It is called out in the PR description; please also state it in the upgrade notes, ideally with a migration recipe. The GraphBatch rule (rebase onto the database zone) is a third convention that matches only for UTC databases, so please open a follow-up issue for it.

  2. CREATE INDEX in a transaction that wrote to the indexed type loses every committed record on rollback: lookups find nothing, UNIQUE accepts a duplicate #10490, IndexBuildCallerChanges.apply

    • "No writer can slip in between the two steps" rests on the schema write lock. A test with a concurrent commit during the build would pin that down.
    • readDocument treats RecordNotFoundException as "no committed version". That is right for a created record, but it could also hide a genuine read error. A comment would help.
    • removeFromIndex is used for deleted records. Please confirm there are tests for every index family (full-text, vector, geospatial and LSM tree), since the remove(keys, rid) semantics are not uniform, and for all three entry points (type, bucket, super-type propagation).
    • snapshotAfterBuild falls back to baseline = pending on IllegalStateException. That can make the next update diff against the wrong state and leave a stale entry. At least log it at FINE.
  3. A list nested in a list or map HTTP parameter is stored as a primitive long[] or double[], so =, .type() and GROUP BY see a different value than for the same list as a literal #10488, Type.unwrapNestedPrimitiveArrays in putProperty

    • This runs on every property write. It is cheap for scalar-only lists, but a large List<Map> is walked on each set. Consider limiting it to the HTTP params path, or caching.
    • Only long[] and double[] are handled, with a Javadoc note to keep them in sync with JSONArray.toPrimitiveNumericArrayOrNull. A test that fails when a new shape is added there would enforce that.
    • holdsNestedPrimitiveArray recurses without a depth limit. Please confirm the JSON parser bounds nesting depth, so hostile HTTP params cannot cause a StackOverflowError.
    • Containers holding a replacement are copied to ArrayList, LinkedHashSet or LinkedHashMap. A TreeMap, TreeSet or LinkedList input would lose its ordering or type, so please add a test that documents what happens.
  4. Graph Analytical View: a vertex inserted right after ALTER TYPE ... SUPERTYPE joins a listed type is missing from the view and algo.wcc #10491, DeltaCollector.isRelevant now calls meetWrittenVertexType, which can mutate view state from the commit listener on every vertex write. Please confirm it is thread-safe and cannot race with a rebuild swapping the snapshot.

Style (CLAUDE.md)

The code follows the repo conventions. getWrittenRecordIdsIn builds a LinkedHashSet and then copies it to an ArrayList. That is acceptable for DDL time, but one copy could be avoided.

Tests

Security / performance

No new dependencies. The only security concern is the recursion depth in item 3. The per-write scan in item 3 is the main performance cost. The #10490 work happens only at DDL time and is chunked, so memory stays bounded.

Overall this is solid work. The points above are mostly confirmations and hardening, not blockers.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

- #10490: a record created, updated and deleted in one transaction, the super-type propagation with updates and deletes of the subtype's records (commit and rollback), and a geospatial index compared with one built the plain way over the same final records. The not-found handling of the reconciliation is commented, and the fallback of snapshotAfterBuild is logged at FINE.
- #10489: negative offsets and named zones across DST, and date() / asDatetime() agreeing with what an INSERT stores.
- #10488: what a TreeMap, LinkedList or TreeSet becomes with and without a replacement.

Review of PR 10497 (#10488, #10489, #10490, #10491)

Overall this is a careful, well-documented set of fixes, and each issue has a regression test (engine tests plus one server IT). I read the main-code diff. Feedback below, mostly minor. I did not run the tests.

Good

Points to consider

  1. MutableDocument.putProperty is a hot path. Type.unwrapNestedPrimitiveArrays now walks every nested list or map on every property write. The scalar short-circuit helps, but a large List<Float> embedding is still O(n) per write. Please check with a quick benchmark, or confirm there is a cheap guard such as skipping flat lists of Number. The walk is recursive, so a pathological or deeply nested value could overflow the stack. Consider a depth limit, or confirm depth is already bounded upstream.
  2. unwrapNestedPrimitiveArrays handles only long[] and double[]. The Javadoc says a new shape in JSONArray.toPrimitiveNumericArrayOrNull must be added here too. Nothing enforces that. A small test that fails if the two diverge would keep them in sync.
  3. DeltaCollector.isRelevant has a side effect. meetWrittenVertexType is called inside a predicate, and it captures a verdict that depends on call order. It is safe if it really runs on the first write of each type. A short note at the call site, or moving the call out of the predicate, would make this less fragile.
  4. DocumentIndexer.snapshotAfterBuild fallback. When no original buffer is readable, it uses pending as the baseline for the other indexes. That can leave a stale entry for the other indexes on the next update. It is logged only at FINE. Please confirm this case is unreachable in practice, or log it at a higher level.
  5. getWrittenRecordIdsIn allocation. It builds a LinkedHashSet and then copies it into an ArrayList. This is DDL time, so it is acceptable. Returning the set, or a primitive RID array, would match the project's GC-light preference.
  6. Failure in step 2 of the build. The committed entries are already committed, so cleanup depends on every caller dropping the index. The Javadoc says they do. A test that forces a failure in step 2 and asserts the index is dropped would pin that down. I did not check whether the existing tests cover it.
  7. Behavior change in The same instant with a +02:00 offset is stored as 03:04:05 from a String and as 01:04:05 from an OffsetDateTime, so HTTP and Bolt write different DATETIME values #10489. date() and .asDatetime() now return different values for offset-bearing strings. This is documented. Existing stored data is not rewritten, and GraphBatch still uses a third rule (GraphBatch bulk path rebases an offset-bearing DATETIME string onto the database zone, while Type.convert stores the UTC wall clock #10498). That is a known limitation worth keeping on the follow-up list.

Tests

No blocking issues found.

Review

I read the main-source changes. I did not run the tests, and I skimmed the test files rather than reading them closely.

Overall: The fixes are well reasoned, and the comments explain the why. The PR bundles four unrelated issues (#10488 to #10491), which makes it hard to review and to revert. Splitting it would help if it isn't too late.

#10488 (nested primitive arrays)

  • Unwrapping in MutableDocument.putProperty is a sensible choke point. holdsNestedPrimitiveArray checks scalars first and copies nothing in the common case, which suits the hot path.
  • unwrapNestedPrimitiveArrays only handles long[] and double[]. The Javadoc says a new shape in toPrimitiveNumericArrayOrNull must be added here as well, but nothing enforces that. A test that fails when JSONArray can produce a primitive array this method doesn't unwrap would catch the drift.
  • Copies are rebuilt as ArrayList, LinkedHashSet or LinkedHashMap. This loses the original collection type, which is probably fine, but it deserves a line in the tests.
  • Narrowing long[] elements to Integer where they fit is consistent with the scalar parser. Mixed Integer and Long elements in one list could still surprise someone, so document that.

#10489 (DATETIME offset strings)

  • This is a deliberate behavior change. It is called out in the PR description and the release notes. Existing values are not migrated, so the same instant can be stored two ways in one database. A short note in the upgrade section would help.
  • The bulk path (GraphBatch) still rebases onto the database zone. After this change HTTP/SQL and bulk loads disagree for any non-UTC database. This is the "third rule" the description mentions. Please link a follow-up issue so it isn't lost.
  • parseDateTimeKeepingWallClock is now used only for DATE. The enum OffsetPolicy is cleaner than the old boolean.

#10490 (CREATE INDEX in a dirty transaction)

  • The two-step design is sound: index the committed state in its own transaction, then queue the caller's creates, updates and deletes on the caller's transaction. Deciding from the before and after versions is more robust than keying on the kind of change.
  • getWrittenRecordIdsIn builds a LinkedHashSet and then copies it to an ArrayList. That is acceptable for DDL, but you could return the set, or size it up front.
  • snapshotAfterBuild falls back to pending as the baseline on IllegalStateException, logging only at FINE. In that case the next update diffs against the wrong state for the other indexes, which can leave stale entries. Consider logging at WARNING, or failing the build.
  • The committed step commits independently, so if the second step fails, the committed entries stay until the caller's cleanup drops the component. The comment says the callers handle this. A test that forces a failure in IndexBuildCallerChanges.apply and asserts the index is dropped would confirm it.
  • Reading the committed versions through CommittedReadScope inside the schema write lock looks correct. Please check lock-ordering and deadlock risk against concurrent committers, since the comment relies on recordFileChanges holding the lock.
  • removeFromIndex mirrors addToIndex, so asymmetry is unlikely. A test with a composite or list-expanded index (LIST_ITEM, MAP_KEY) for the delete and update paths would be worth having.

#10491 (OLAP view routing)

  • Routing by schema (routesVertexType) and recording the verdict once in meetWrittenVertexType is reasonable. The holdsJoinedVertexType call there is a side-effecting call whose result is discarded, which reads oddly. A name that says it records the verdict would be clearer.
  • This runs on every vertex write through the listener. The comment says a repeat write is a map lookup. Confirm that holds for the vertexTypes == null and filter-based paths.

Style and conventions (CLAUDE.md)

  • No new dependencies, and the tests follow the Issue<N>...Test pattern.
  • DocumentIndexer imports LogManager and Level, which is fine. Check that no fully qualified names remain.
  • Check that the new tests use assertThat(...) throughout, and that none of them assert raw wall-clock time.
  • The HTTP IT (Issue10488NestedArrayParamHttpIT) must take its port from the fixture base class, not a hard-coded one. HardcodedTestServerPortsTest should catch this.
  • Please run the date, index and OLAP suites in CI. The date change touches date(), asDatetime(), Type.convert and the Cypher datetime() round trip ([Cypher] datetime() value not persisted when SET on a DATETIME-typed property #4125), which is a wide blast radius.

Nothing here blocks the PR in my view. The main requests are a follow-up issue for the bulk-path zone mismatch, a louder failure for the snapshotAfterBuild fallback, and a test that ties the list of unwrapped array types to JSONArray.

Review (my copy of the diff was truncated, so I did not read all the test changes, and I did not run the build or tests.)

Overall: The four fixes are well scoped. The comments explain the why with issue references, and the release notes state the behavior change for 10489 clearly.

Notes

  1. Cost on the write path (10488). Type.unwrapNestedPrimitiveArrays now runs in MutableDocument.putProperty on every property write. For a large List<Float> or List<String> that is an O(n) scan per set. It allocates nothing, and checking scalars first is a good choice. Consider a quick @Tag("benchmark") test with a 1536-element list to confirm the cost is negligible. Normalizing at the HTTP params boundary would avoid touching the hot path, though the PR explains why it chose the choke point.
  2. Only long[] and double[] are unwrapped. The Javadoc says a new shape in toPrimitiveNumericArrayOrNull must be added here too. That coupling is easy to miss. A test that fails when the two diverge, or a shared constant, would help.
  3. Container type changes. A Set becomes a LinkedHashSet and any Map becomes a LinkedHashMap. A TreeMap or a custom comparator would lose its semantics, but only when a replacement happens.
  4. 10489 is a behavior change. Existing data is not rewritten, and the release notes say so. The bulk path (GraphBatch) keeps a different rule (database-zone rebasing, tracked as 10498). It gives the same value only for a UTC database, so a non-UTC database can store different values for one instant depending on the ingest path. Please keep 10498 on the list.
  5. 10490 transaction semantics. Building the committed entries in their own transaction and queueing only the caller pending changes is the right fix. snapshotAfterBuild adds real complexity, so I would like tests covering these in one transaction:
    • insert, then CREATE INDEX, then update, then commit
    • the same sequence ending in rollback
    • delete of a committed record, then CREATE INDEX, then rollback
    • a UNIQUE index with a duplicate of a committed key
  6. 10491. Splitting "covers this type" from "holds this type yet" in the commit listener is reasonable. Please make sure a regression test covers update and delete as well as insert, as the release notes claim.

Style (CLAUDE.md)

  • Check that the new LogManager and Level imports in DocumentIndexer are actually used.
  • Confirm no debug System.out is left, that new tests use assertThat(...) syntax, and that timing assertions use StallAwareStopwatch.

Nothing blocking from what I could see. I would like to see the benchmark from note 1 and the transaction test matrix from note 5 before merge.

- #10491: a property updated right after the type joined is what the view holds once it holds the type (read through the view itself), in both update modes.
- #10490: a record inserted before the index and updated after it, with commit and with rollback.
- #10488: a benchmark-tagged tripwire on the walk of a 1536-float list, so the per-write cost is pinned outside the regular lanes.

Fifth round, in the last push (tests only):

  • Cost benchmark (A list nested in a list or map HTTP parameter is stored as a primitive long[] or double[], so =, .type() and GROUP BY see a different value than for the same list as a literal #10488 note 1): Issue10488UnwrapCostBenchmarkTest, @Tag("benchmark") so it stays out of the regular lanes: 200,000 walks of a 1536-float list, bounded by a StallAwareStopwatch tripwire (assertGaveUpWithin, not a latency budget). Run by hand it passes; the walk is about half a microsecond.
  • Parser/unwrapper coupling (note 2): already pinned by theRequestParserLeavesNoPrimitiveArrayTheUnwrapperDoesNotReplace (it walks a parsed request of every array shape and fails on any array other than long[] and double[]); it was in the part of the diff that was truncated.
  • Container types (note 3): documented by aContainerKeepsItsTypeUnlessItHoldsAReplacement.
  • Transaction matrix (note 5): insert, CREATE INDEX, update, then commit and rollback is aRecordInsertedBeforeTheIndexAndUpdatedAfterItFollowsTheOutcomeOfTheTransaction; the delete of a committed record followed by CREATE INDEX and a rollback is aDeleteOfACommittedRecordIsAppliedOnCommitAndTakenBackOnRollback for every family; the UNIQUE duplicate of a committed key is aPendingDuplicateOfACommittedKeyIsRefusedAtTheCommitAndLeavesACompleteUniqueIndex and the delete-and-reinsert one is aUniqueIndexOverADeletedAndReinsertedKeyFollowsTheOutcomeOfTheTransaction.
  • Update and delete for the view (note 6): delete was covered (aVertexDeletedRightAfterTheTypeJoinedIsNotInTheViewAnswer); the update now is too (aPropertyUpdatedRightAfterTheTypeJoinedIsWhatTheViewHoldsOnceItHoldsTheType, read through GraphAnalyticalView.getProperty once the view holds the type), in both update modes.
  • Style: the LogManager and Level imports in DocumentIndexer are used by the FINE log of snapshotAfterBuild; the new tests use assertThat(...), no System.out, and timing is only bounded by StallAwareStopwatch. GraphBatch bulk path rebases an offset-bearing DATETIME string onto the database zone, while Type.convert stores the UTC wall clock #10498 stays open for the bulk path.

Review

Read the main-source diff in full. I did not build the PR or run its tests. Overall the changes are well reasoned and well documented, and the tests are thorough. Notes below, none blocking.

#10488 nested primitive arrays (Type.unwrapNestedPrimitiveArrays, MutableDocument.putProperty)

  • Hot path: putProperty now walks every nested container on every write. The scalar-first short-circuit in holdsNestedPrimitiveArray keeps the vector-as-list-of-floats case cheap, and the benchmark test is a good addition. A top-level List<Float> is still an O(n) pass of instanceof checks per write, so please confirm the benchmark covers a large flat list (for example 1536 floats) and not only nested shapes.
  • The rebuilt copy is always a LinkedHashMap, ArrayList or LinkedHashSet. That is fine for stored values, but a sorted map or set (TreeMap, TreeSet) given by a Java caller loses its ordering or comparator when it holds a nested array. This is an unlikely case, but worth a line in the Javadoc.
  • Only long[] narrows to Integer. double[] stays Double, which matches the JSON scalar parser, so this looks right.
  • primitiveArrayToJsonList is now shared with PostCommandHandler, which removes duplicated logic. Good.

#10489 DATETIME offset strings

  • This is a deliberate behavior change. The release-notes entry is clear, but data already stored is not rewritten, and GraphBatch still rebases onto the database zone. So there are now three rules (UTC convert, keep wall clock for DATE, rebase for the bulk path). They agree only for UTC databases, and the PR text acknowledges this. Please make sure GraphBatch bulk path rebases an offset-bearing DATETIME string onto the database zone, while Type.convert stores the UTC wall clock #10498 stays open and is linked from the code comment in DateUtils.
  • parseDateTimeKeepingWallClock is still used for DATE. The Javadoc explains this well.
  • No functional concern with dropZone. withZoneSameInstant(ZoneOffset.UTC) is correct for both offsets and zone ids.

#10490 CREATE INDEX inside a transaction

  • The two-step approach (committed state in its own transaction, then caller-pending changes queued on the caller's transaction) is sound, and deciding from the before and after versions rather than from create, update or delete flags is the robust choice.
  • getWrittenRecordIdsIn allocates a LinkedHashSet plus a copy ArrayList. This is fine for DDL, but return new ArrayList<>(result) could be avoided by building the list directly if you de-duplicate another way. Minor.
  • Failure window: if IndexBuildCallerChanges.apply throws after the committed entries are already committed, the index relies on the callers' cleanup arms to drop it. The Javadoc says so. Make sure there is a test that forces a failure in step 2 and asserts the component is dropped. I could not tell from the diff whether one exists.
  • snapshotAfterBuild falls back to pending as the baseline on IllegalStateException, and that is only logged at FINE. This could hide a real inconsistency, so consider logging it at WARNING, or confirm the case is genuinely benign.
  • In snapshotAfterBuild, values.containsKey(key) || index == built is subtle (the built index wins over earlier indexes for a shared key). A short comment would help.

#10491 Graph Analytical View routing

  • Routing vertices by schema (routesVertexType) while serving by coversVertexType mirrors the existing edge logic, which is a good consistency fix.
  • meetWrittenVertexType is called from isRelevant for every written vertex. The Javadoc says a repeat write costs a map lookup. Please confirm the lookup is not under a lock that the commit listener would now contend on.

Tests and conventions

  • Test coverage looks strong, with regression tests per issue and multiple index types. Also fixing Issue5606BuilderStateCarryOverTest is welcome.
  • Issue10488UnwrapCostBenchmarkTest appears to use @Tag and StallAwareStopwatch, as CLAUDE.md requires. Please double check that the tag is benchmark.
  • Style is consistent with the codebase. I saw no em dashes and no leftover debug output in the main sources.

Nice work on a large, multi-issue PR. One suggestion: since four unrelated issues share one PR, a future bisect or revert would be easier if they were separate commits. Squash-merging would lose that.

Javadoc and comments only: what a sorted container becomes when it holds an array, the link from the rebasing rule to #10498, why the fallback of snapshotAfterBuild is benign and why the built index wins a shared property.

Review

I read the first part of the diff (docs, engine changes up to DateUtils). I did not read the rest of DateUtils or the test files, and I did not build or run anything.

What looks good

Points to consider

  1. Write hot path (A list nested in a list or map HTTP parameter is stored as a primitive long[] or double[], so =, .type() and GROUP BY see a different value than for the same list as a literal #10488). putProperty now walks every nested Collection and Map on every write. A list of floats exits early on Number, so that case is cheap. A large list of maps or of embedded lists gets a full recursive walk each time. That is probably fine, but a micro-benchmark with a large nested payload would confirm there's no regression. Only the non-top-level case needs it.
  2. Container type loss. The Javadoc says a TreeMap or TreeSet holding an array comes back as a LinkedHashMap/LinkedHashSet. That is acceptable for stored values, but a test pinning it would stop it changing by accident.
  3. Narrowing long[] to Integer (A list nested in a list or map HTTP parameter is stored as a primitive long[] or double[], so =, .type() and GROUP BY see a different value than for the same list as a literal #10488). This matches the JSON scalar parser. It means an array of longs that happen to fit in an int is stored differently from the same data typed as Long from Java. A comment or test noting that GROUP BY equality is the intent would help.
  4. Index survives a rollback (CREATE INDEX in a transaction that wrote to the indexed type loses every committed record on rollback: lookups find nothing, UNIQUE accepts a duplicate #10490). The committed entries now survive a rollback of the caller, but the index is registered before the build. If IndexBuildCallerChanges.apply fails, you rely on the callers' cleanup arms to drop the component. The Javadoc says so. Please confirm there is a failure-injection test for each entry point: type, bucket and super-type propagation.
  5. snapshotAfterBuild fallback. On IllegalStateException it falls back to the pending values and logs at FINE. The justification in the comment makes sense. Catching IllegalStateException as control flow is fragile, though. If getOriginalDocument can signal absence another way, that would be cleaner.
  6. DATETIME behavior change (The same instant with a +02:00 offset is stored as 03:04:05 from a String and as 01:04:05 from an OffsetDateTime, so HTTP and Bolt write different DATETIME values #10489). date() and .asDatetime() also change their results for offset-bearing strings. Existing queries relying on the old output will change silently. The release note covers DATETIME, but I'd add date()/asDatetime() to the "who sees a different answer" section. The three-way inconsistency with GraphBatch (GraphBatch bulk path rebases an offset-bearing DATETIME string onto the database zone, while Type.convert stores the UTC wall clock #10498) is acknowledged, and I'm fine with it being tracked separately.
  7. CLAUDE.md style. Use final consistently. try (final CommittedReadScope committedOnly = ...) is fine. Check that the new tests avoid wall-clock assertions and hard-coded ports, which the repo's rules forbid.

Tests

The PR description says tests were added or updated, for example Issue10450.... Please confirm there is a regression test for each of the four issues. In particular:

Overall this is a careful set of fixes. The points above are mostly about confirming test coverage and the cost on the write path.

Review of PR #10497

Overall this is a careful, well-documented set of fixes. Each issue has a dedicated regression test, and the two-step index build is easy to follow. I read the diff only and did not run the tests. Below are the points I'd look at before merge.

Behavior and correctness

  1. Type.unwrapNestedPrimitiveArrays on every putProperty (MutableDocument.java). The walk is cheap for scalar lists because the scalar check comes first. It is recursive with no depth guard, though. A deeply nested or self-referential Map/List (possible from Java callers, not from JSON) would throw StackOverflowError on a write that worked before. This is probably acceptable, but a short note or a depth cap would make the risk explicit. A large List<Object> of non-scalar items (embedded Documents, RIDs) is also walked in full on every write. Please confirm Issue10488UnwrapCostBenchmarkTest covers that shape too.

  2. Container type loss is documented (TreeMap becomes LinkedHashMap). Collection types other than List/Set (for example a Deque) silently become ArrayList. Worth one line in the Javadoc.

  3. The same instant with a +02:00 offset is stored as 03:04:05 from a String and as 01:04:05 from an OffsetDateTime, so HTTP and Bolt write different DATETIME values #10489 changes what is stored. Offset strings now shift to UTC. Existing values are not rewritten, and GraphBatch still rebases onto the database zone. For a non-UTC database, the same string can now give different values via SQL and via batch import. This is called out as left alone, so please make sure a follow-up issue exists and that the release notes list it as a behavior change.

  4. IndexBuilder.buildCreatedIndex. The committed scan runs in its own transaction under CommittedReadScope, then IndexBuildCallerChanges queues the caller's changes. The argument that the schema write lock prevents a writer slipping in between the two steps is sound, but it relies on every caller holding that lock. A short assertion or comment at the other entry points would guard against a future caller that doesn't.

  5. IndexBuildCallerChanges.apply / getWrittenRecordIdsIn. The set plus the copy into an ArrayList is one allocation more than needed (fine for DDL-time use). newRecords.get(i).getIdentity() can be a temporary RID before commit, and addToIndex then receives it. Please confirm the commit-time RID fix-up covers index entries queued this way, as it does for live inserts.

Style (per CLAUDE.md)

  • final usage and imports look right, and I spotted no fully qualified names.
  • Issue10488UnwrapCostBenchmarkTest should carry @Tag("benchmark"). Ignore this if it is already there, since it is not visible in the part of the diff I read.
  • Any elapsed-time assertions in the new tests should use StallAwareStopwatch, not raw wall-clock.
  • The new HTTP IT should derive its URL via getServerHttpUrl(...), never a literal 2480.
  • Several inline comments retell the issue history (issue #NNNN). Trimming them would keep the code closer to the surrounding density.

Test coverage

Coverage is strong: unit tests, an HTTP IT, a rollback test for the index build, and a view test for #10491. Cases I'd like to see if they are not there already:

Security and performance

No security concerns: the unwrap runs on already-parsed data and exposes nothing new. On the hot path it adds one container walk and no allocation when nothing is replaced, which is acceptable.

Nice work. The points above are mostly confirmations and small hardening.

CI on 4f9cc8d, compared with the run of the base commit on main (890a7f4, Java CI - test run 39485914943):

  • integration-tests, slow-unit-tests, vector-unit-tests, builder-tests, opencypher-tck-tests, studio-e2e-tests and the other e2e lanes pass here. On main, integration-tests and vector-unit-tests are red.
  • unit-tests is red, with three failing classes, none of them in the code of this PR:
    • Issue7139RetainedBackupNotDestroyedTest (ha-raft) and Issue7089NaNTransparentSumAvgTest (timeseries, "Sealed store ... no longer exists on disk"): both fail identically on main's run.
    • DuplexHttpExchangeTest (server, a socket-closed message in an assertion): not in main's list, passes locally here (19 of 19), a flake in a handler this PR does not touch.
    • Issue5606BuilderStateCarryOverTest and the QueryAdmissionGateGremlin test are red on main; the former is fixed by this PR (an outcome of create() is not a setting).
  • python-e2e-tests is red in 33 seconds, as on main (the runner image); CI Status follows from those two lanes.

Review state: the last two reviews of the main-source diff find nothing blocking, and every point of them is answered above or in the earlier rounds; the CodeRabbit finding (the diff base of a later update) is fixed, covered by tests and acknowledged in its thread. #10498 stays open for the bulk-path rule.

Verified on the merge 83c93e6d84 (CI jars of 7691ae7571, which contains it), embedded and over a server, JDK 25 and 21 identical where both ran: 11 of 11 embedded result files of the pre-verification runs (08b9972b43) come out identical in content on the merge, and the server table (HTTP and Bolt) is identical to the head's on JDK 25 and 21, except the Bolt ams row (1 row on the head file), which the current client cannot write (the neo4j driver raises or crashes before it sends anything, also against the head today).

Against the head, #10488, #10490, #10491 read the same in every number; #10489 differs only in the Bolt row count (3 against 4). Regressions between head and merge: 0 (no case is wrong on the merge that was right on 03635fd1fb, and no embedded result file differs from the head's).
