ee cli update reports "downloaded PHAR is broken" when the real cause is a missing PHP sqlite driver #1949

Open

Description

@gingerbeardman

Environment

  • EasyEngine 4.13.1 → 4.13.2
  • Ubuntu, PHP 8.5.4 CLI (upgraded via apt; php8.5-sqlite3 was not installed)

I recently updated to Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS (GNU/Linux 7.0.0-1013-oracle x86_64) which cleared out some packages.
After, I reinstalled PHP but obviously missed some things. 😅

What happened

md5 hash verified: 0da14ba28ef4e884bae18d687afd1c19
Updating EasyEngine to new version. This might take some time.

Error: Unable to initialize connection to EE sqlite database: could not find driver

Error: The downloaded PHAR is broken, try running ee cli update again.

The download is fine: the md5 check passes. The new phar fails its post-download sanity run because PDO SQLite isn’t available. The final message then tells the user the PHAR is broken and to retry, which can never succeed.

Expected

When the sanity check fails because of a missing PHP extension, report that cause directly. For example:

PHP extension pdo_sqlite is not loaded for PHP 8.5. Install php8.5-sqlite3 and try again.

It would also help to check the required extensions (pdo_sqlite, curl, zip, mbstring) up front, before downloading anything.

Fix on my side
apt install php8.5-sqlite3 (plus curl/zip/mbstring), then the update worked.
