AI-assisted finding: CrewStructuredTool.from_function separately drops Annotated metadata in structured_tool.py. I have a one-line include_extras=True fix and regression tests, with 251 tool tests passing. Would you prefer a separate issue and PR for this path? I can’t apply upstream labels. Could a maintainer advise how to submit both with the required llm-generated label? |

Under PEP 563 annotations are stored as strings. Passing them straight to create_model made pydantic evaluate the resulting ForwardRefs against base_tool's globals, so any type the caller declared failed to resolve and every run() raised "`X` is not fully defined". Resolve them with get_type_hints, which evaluates against func.__globals__, as CrewStructuredTool._create_schema_from_function already does. Resolve with include_extras=True so that Annotated metadata, such as Field(gt=...) constraints, is carried into the schema instead of being stripped by the default.
get_type_hints raises for functools.partial adapters and partials carry no __annotations__, so _resolve_annotations returned no entry for their remaining parameters and both from_langchain paths degraded an annotation that inspect.signature still carried into Any. Fall back to the parameter's own annotation (Any only when it is empty) so typed partials keep their validation and schema detail.
…odule get_type_hints cannot evaluate functools.partial adapters, so for a partial over a PEP 563 function _resolve_annotations returned no hints and both from_langchain paths fed pydantic raw string annotations it resolved against base_tool's globals, recreating the unresolved forward-ref failure this PR fixes elsewhere. Unwrap partials first so the remaining parameters get the underlying function's evaluated hints; add regression tests over a from __future__ import annotations partial.
A single unresolvable annotation — typically a TYPE_CHECKING-only return type — made get_type_hints (or the signature(eval_str=True) evaluation used for @typing.no_type_check callables) fail the whole callable, so every parameter degraded to a raw PEP 563 string and the tool recreated the uncallable-state failure this PR fixes. _resolve_annotations now evaluates each raw annotation on its own in the defining module: resolvable parameters keep their real types, while deferred names keep the raw string for pydantic's lazy forward references. functools.partial handling, Annotated metadata, and the deferred semantics for TYPE_CHECKING-only parameter types are unchanged.

Fixes #7623
Summary
A tool defined in a module that starts with
from __future__ import annotations(PEP 563) was constructed without error and then permanently uncallable: the first call raisedValueError: Tool 'wallet' arguments validation failed: `Wallet` is not fully defined; you should define `WalletArgs`, then call `Wallet.model_rebuild()`, and rendering the tool into a prompt raisedPydanticUserErrorwith the same message. It was not limited to user-defined models —Optional[str],Literal["a", "b"]andpathlib.Pathfailed identically, because every annotation in such a module is stored as a string. Why (root cause)
Under PEP 563
inspect.Parameter.annotationis a plainstr. It was handed straight topydantic.create_model, and pydantic resolved the resultingForwardRefagainst the calling frame's namespace —lib/crewai/src/crewai/tools/base_tool.py— where the caller's names do not exist. Onmainthe raw annotation is read at six schema-building sites:base_tool.py:230andbase_tool.py:246—BaseTool._default_args_schema(the_runand_arunbranches)base_tool.py:447—Tool.from_langchainbase_tool.py:483—BaseTool._set_args_schemabase_tool.py:641—Tool._create_schema_from_functionbase_tool.py:749—_make_tooltyping.get_type_hintsevaluates those strings againstfunc.__globals__, which is whatCrewStructuredTool._create_schema_from_function(lib/crewai/src/crewai/tools/structured_tool.py:316) already does — the sibling path returns the right result under the identical repro, which is why the issue called it out as the control.Changes
lib/crewai/src/crewai/tools/base_tool.py_resolve_annotations(func):get_type_hints(func, include_extras=True), falling back to the rawfunc.__annotations__when evaluation raises, so a name that exists only underTYPE_CHECKINGstill defers instead of breaking tool construction (unchanged behavior)._resolve_annotations(target).get(name, Any)instead of the rawparam.annotation.include_extras=Trueis load-bearing: the default recursively stripsAnnotated[...]metadata while resolving, sox: Annotated[int, Field(gt=10)]would come back as bareint— the schema would loseexclusiveMinimumandrun(x=5)would be accepted instead of rejected.Verification
lib/crewai/tests/tools/test_base_tool_future_annotations.py(new, 14 tests) covers the@tooldecorator,BaseToolsubclass_run, the lazily derived schema,Tool.from_langchain, an annotation that is unresolvable at runtime, and theAnnotated/Fieldconstraints.Red on

Medium Risk
Changes how every inferred tool args schema is built; behavior is broader than PEP 563 fixes but is covered by new tests and aligns with existing structured-tool behavior.
Overview
Fixes tool argument schema construction when callables live in modules using
from __future__ import annotations(PEP 563). Previously, raw string annotations frominspect.signaturewere passed straight into Pydantic, so types were resolved inbase_tool.pyinstead of the tool author’s module—breaking validation, JSON schema, and prompt rendering for models,Literal,Optional,Path, etc.base_tool.pyadds_resolve_annotations(and per-annotation_eval_annotation_in_module) to evaluate hints in the defining module viaget_type_hints(..., include_extras=True), with fallbacks forfunctools.partial,@no_type_check, and partial failure when a return type exists only underTYPE_CHECKING. All auto-generatedargs_schemapaths (@tool,BaseTool._run/_arun,_set_args_schema, bothfrom_langchainconverters) now use resolved hints instead ofparam.annotation.Tests cover PEP 563 modules, partials,
no_type_check, deferred names, andAnnotatedconstraints so metadata likeField(gt=10)still enforces validation.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 1ded887. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.
