🔵 Needs a closer look
Security-sensitive certificate issuance, custom ASN.1 validation, and identity binding warrant final human review.
No open issues 🎉
What changed in this PR
Extends Fleet’s request certificate API to issue certificates through Google CAS, building on the CA configuration support added in #56435.
Changes:
- Adds Google CAS issuance with cached clients, transient-error handling, and PKCS7 or PEM responses.
- Enforces UPN-only certificate requests, identity binding, and validation of issued certificates.
- Adds service and client tests covering issuance, validation, failures, concurrency, and key rotation.

Require client-authentication usage before returning the certificate.
The validation must reject certificates with an explicit EKU restriction that excludes x509.ExtKeyUsageClientAuth, including certificates restricted only through UnknownExtKeyUsage. It must also reject certificates whose nonzero KeyUsage omits x509.KeyUsageDigitalSignature.
Do not reject unrestricted certificates. An absent EKU, x509.ExtKeyUsageAny, or absent KeyUsage must remain valid.

Leaving this one as is. Which usages the certificate carries is up to the CA pool's issuance policy, and Fleet can't tell what the relying party needs: some RADIUS and VPN setups accept certificates without the client authentication EKU, or with a vendor-specific one. Refusing after issuance would also leave an issued certificate behind on every retry. The check that's there covers what must never reach a host: a certificate that can sign other certificates.

Second of three PRs for Google CAS: the request certificate API now issues from a Google CAS CA pool. Google refuses certificates that mix the UPN with other SANs, so for this CA type the UPN is the CSR's only allowed SAN and the identity both checks bind to. Related issue: #52623

We do not do this validation for other CAs. I wonder if it is needed here. If it is really needed here, then perhaps we need an issue to add this validation to Hydrant EST, etc.?

The CSR checks already stop a host from asking for CA capabilities, but the pool's issuance policy can still add them. If it did, a host would get a certificate that can sign other certificates, so this check catches that scenario. Same idea for the key check: the private key never leaves the host, so a certificate for any other key is useless. I think it's cheap, so I'd keep it. I'll file an issue to add these checks to the other CAs.

Is this strictness required? Other CAs don't require UPN. Google CAS will only issue a cert if CSR contains UPN?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Google doesn't need a UPN, but it won't issue one next to an email or DNS SAN (I tried both against my test pool). The other CAs need the UPN plus an email when identity checks are on, and Google rejects that, so here we bind on the UPN alone, like the request script in the docs (#55186). The rest is our call. We don't allow other extensions and we check every request, since Google signs whatever the CSR carries unless the pool's policy filters it out.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
Yes, I think we need it. Google copies the CSR's subject into the certificate as is, and we only verify the UPN, so this keeps the subject naming the same user.

**Related issue:** #52623 1. **PR 1:** types, migration, datastore, service, activities, GitOps (#56435, merged) 2. **PR 2:** request certificate support (#56465) 3. **PR 3 (this one):** frontend ## What Adds Google CAS to the certificate authorities UI. - The Add CA dropdown offers "Google Certificate Authority Service (CAS)" after DigiCert, and the CA list shows that label. - The Google CAS form has Name, Project ID, CA pool, Location and Service account key. It uses `useFormValidation`: errors show when a field loses focus or on submit, and Save stays enabled. The client checks mirror the server's: the characters Google allows in the project, pool and location, a JSON object for the key, and a name not used by another Google CAS CA. - The key is a password field, like the other CA secrets. When editing, it shows masked and is only sent if replaced. An edit sends only the changed fields, so saving without changes does nothing. - For a Google CAS CA, the modals show the server's 4xx errors as it words them, since they name the field or Google setting to fix (for example "The service account can't access the CA pool..."). - The activity feed shows added, edited and deleted Google CAS CAs. Departures from the Figma, for design to confirm: - The Name help text is "Letters, numbers, and underscores only." The Figma copy mentions a profile variable, which doesn't exist for this CA. - The service account key is a password input like the sibling secret fields, not a textarea. ## How I tested ``` yarn eslint <changed files> yarn tsc --noEmit yarn jest frontend/pages/admin/IntegrationsPage/cards/CertificateAuthorities frontend/pages/DashboardPage/cards/ActivityFeed ``` All pass. Manually, with PR 2 and this PR on a local Fleet server and a real Google CAS CA pool (DevOps tier): - Add: each field's validation message, the duplicate name check, and a key Google rejects ("Couldn't authenticate with Google CAS..."). - Edit: fields prefilled with the key masked, a pool the service account can't read is refused with Google's message, and a rename with the masked key sends only the name. - Delete, and the added, edited and deleted activities in the feed. - GitOps mode disables Add, edit and delete. Fleet Free shows the Premium message. The move to `useFormValidation` came after this manual pass. Jest covers it: errors on blur and submit, Save enabled, trimmed values, and the masked key accepted only when editing. Not tested in the UI: adding a CA with a valid key. That path was tested through the API against the real pool; the UI request is the same as the rejected-key case above. # Checklist for submitter ## Testing - [x] Added/updated automated tests - [x] QA'd all new/changed functionality manually ## Frontend - [x] Attached a screenshot or screen recording of each user-visible change.
