[INFRA-1125] fix(security): require project membership for workspace drafts - #10047
Conversation
…drafts Draft create/update and draft-to-issue conversion now require an active ADMIN/MEMBER role in the draft's project within the URL workspace, matching IssueViewSet.create. The draft serializer's project field is read-only. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Draft updates also require write access to the draft's own project, and a draft's cycle_id/module_ids must belong to the draft's project (400 otherwise). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

No new blocking findings. One earlier bot finding is still open at head (below).
Verified:
can_write_projectmatches the project-level ADMIN/MEMBER rule and scopes the membership row to the URL workspace, so a membership in another workspace doesn't pass. It runs on create (whenproject_idis supplied), on both the stored and the supplied project inpartial_update, and on the stored project increate_draft_to_issuebefore anything is written.- Making
projectread-only closes theproject-key move.createstill sets it from the checked contextproject_id, and the web client only sendsproject_id/cycle_id/module_idson PATCH. check_cycle_and_modulesruns before anyDraftIssueCycle/DraftIssueModule/CycleIssue/ModuleIssuewrite on all three paths. A malformedcycle_idor a stringmodule_idsreturns 400 at head; on the merge-base a stringmodule_idswas a 500.- Ran
test_workspace_draft_project_membership_app.py: 27 passed. - Falsified: with
serializers/draft.pyandviews/workspace/draft.pyreset to the merge-base, 22/27 fail. The 5 that still pass are the positive controls.
Still open: the issue coderabbitai raised on d099b257 (validation context uses the request project_id rather than the draft's own project) is unchanged at head. A probe confirmed it: a caller who can write both projects A and B PATCHes a draft in A with project_id B and a state from B, gets 204, and the draft keeps project A with B's state_id. Labels, assignees, parent and estimate point validate the same way. Impact is limited because the caller must already have write access to both projects, and conversion re-validates request.data against the draft's project. Fixing it is a one-line change: pass issue.project_id as the serializer's project_id context and keep the access check on the supplied id. There's no test for this case yet.
- Validate state, labels, assignees, parent and estimate point in a draft PATCH against the draft's own project instead of the supplied project_id. The access check on the supplied project_id is unchanged. - Test: a writer of two projects cannot set a state from the other project. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- can_write_project also accepts a workspace ADMIN who is an active member of the project at any role, matching allow_permission - Tests: workspace admin who is a project guest can create, update and convert a draft; a workspace admin outside the project cannot Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Follow-up on ad22abc.
All earlier findings resolved; no new findings.
- Resolved: draft PATCH validated relations against the supplied
project_id(coderabbitai's finding ond099b257, which I confirmed last time).partial_updatenow passesissue.project_idas the serializer context. The access check on a suppliedproject_idis unchanged. State, labels, assignees, parent and estimate point all read that context, andupdate()already usedinstance.project_idfor the cycle and module writes. - Not an issue: coderabbitai's malformed-
project_id500. The decline is correct:BaseViewSet.handle_exceptionmaps Django'sValidationErrorto 400. - Reviewed the new behaviour in ad22abc:
can_write_projectnow also accepts a workspace ADMIN who is an active project member at any role. This matchesallow_permission's workspace-admin branch, whichIssueViewSet.createuses. The workspace-membership lookup is still scoped to the URL slug, and admins who aren't in the project are still refused.
Tests: test_workspace_draft_project_membership_app.py, 29 passed. Falsification: with views/workspace/draft.py reset to 2de8a6d, the two new behaviour tests fail (test_update_validates_state_against_draft_project, test_workspace_admin_project_guest_can_create_update_and_convert_draft). The rest pass, as expected: the admin-not-in-project test is a negative control that also holds on the old code.

Description
WorkspaceDraftIssueViewSetchecked workspace membership only, while a draft's project comes from the request body. A draft could be saved against, and converted into an issue in, a project where the caller had no write role.createandpartial_updatenow require the caller to be an active ADMIN/MEMBER of the draft'sproject_id, in the URL workspace, before saving (403 otherwise).partial_updatechecks both the draft's own project and any differentproject_idsupplied.create_draft_to_issueruns the same check on the draft's project before creating the issue, so drafts saved before this change, or after membership was revoked, are covered too.can_write_project) is the same project-level ruleIssueViewSet.createapplies: an active ADMIN/MEMBER of the project, or a workspace ADMIN who is an active member of the project at any role.DraftIssueCreateSerializermakesprojectread-only, so a PATCH can no longer change a draft's project through theprojectkey. Create still sets it from the checkedproject_id.DraftIssueCreateSerializervalidatescycle_idandmodule_idsagainst the draft's project and workspace on create and update; ids from any other project return 400 and nothing is written.project_id.create_draft_to_issueruns the same cycle/module check (DraftIssueCreateSerializer.check_cycle_and_modules) on the bodycycle_idandmodule_idsbefore creating anything; ids from any other project or workspace return 400 and no work item, cycle or module row is created.Behaviour change: sending
projectin a draft PATCH is now ignored. The web client sendsproject_id, which the PATCH never wrote, so the web client is unaffected. Drafts with no project are unchanged. This PR now also covers cycle and module validation on conversion, which overlaps open PR #9828. Owner scoping for retrieve/delete is left to #10006/#10002.
