Description

Fixes #9995. When two people had the same work item open, the last autosave silently overwrote the other person's description changes, including newly added images (last write wins).

This PR adds an optimistic concurrency check to work item description saves:

  • API: PATCH /issues/{id}/ accepts an optional base_description_html, the description the editor started from. The stored row is locked with select_for_update, and if the stored description no longer matches the base, the API returns 409 with code: "DESCRIPTION_CONFLICT" and the current description_html instead of saving. Requests without the field behave as before, so the public API and other clients are unaffected.
    • Only the description is compared. Using updated_at would also have blocked description saves after unrelated changes such as state or assignees.
    • Stored HTML is sanitized with nh3, so the base also matches when its sanitized form equals the stored value. A user's own previous save is never reported as a conflict.
  • Web: DescriptionInput sends its base with every save.
    • It tracks that base separately from the store. Otherwise a refetched description would move the base while the mounted editor still shows the old content, and the overwrite would go through undetected.
    • Autosaves now run one at a time, so overlapping saves can't conflict with each other.
    • Opening a description stored in the old HTML format makes the editor re-save it in the new format (a migration save). If two people open it at the same moment, one migration save loses the race. That one now quietly loads the latest version instead of showing the dialog, unless the user typed while it was in flight.
    • On a conflict the user sees a dialog: Load latest version replaces the editor content with the stored description, and Keep editing leaves their text in place without saving it.
    • The detail and peek views pass conflict errors through to the editor instead of showing the generic "update failed" toast.
  • i18n: the dialog strings are translated for every locale.
  • Cleared the existing no-shadow warnings in the two issueOperations files I touched, which the pre-commit hook requires.

Not covered: the intake (inbox) description editor, which saves through a different endpoint. Live collaborative editing through apps/live, as pages already have, would be the long-term fix. This PR closes the data-loss window until then.

Test Scenarios

Automated (all passing):

  • plane/tests/unit/utils/test_description_conflict.py: matching, empty-equivalent, changed, and sanitized-base cases.
  • plane/tests/contract/app/test_issue_description_conflict_app.py:
    • a save from the current base succeeds;
    • a stale base returns 409, leaves the stored description untouched, and doesn't log activity;
    • a request without a base keeps the old behaviour;
    • a non-description update ignores the base.
  • Full backend unit suite: 430 passed. Web check:types and check:lint are clean, and i18n sync:check is in sync.

End-to-end against a running API (two real users over HTTP, 14 checks, all passing):

  • Issue reproduction: A saves, then B saves from a stale copy. B gets 409 and A's image stays stored.
  • B then saves from the latest version and succeeds.
  • Saves whose HTML the server sanitizes don't conflict with the client's own next save.
  • An empty description and <p></p> are treated as equal.
  • Saves without a base, and non-description updates, behave as before.
  • Race: A and B PATCH at the same instant from the same base. Every one of 10 rounds gave exactly one 204 and one 409.
  • Checked that the tests catch the bug. On preview, the stale save goes through and A's image is lost (5 checks fail). With the comparison kept but select_for_update() removed, both racing saves succeed in 10/10 rounds.

Browser test: Playwright driving Chrome as two logged-in users against the web app and API (21 checks, all passing):

  • Both users open a legacy-format description at the same moment. The migration saves race (one 204, one 409) and neither user sees a dialog. Before the second commit, this showed the dialog 3 out of 3 times.
  • A adds a paragraph (204). B then edits a stale copy: the save gets 409, B sees the dialog rather than the generic "update failed" toast, and A's paragraph stays stored.
  • Load latest version: B's editor shows A's paragraph, B's next save gets 204, and both edits are stored.
  • Keep editing: A's text stays in the editor and B's edit stays stored. A's next edit gets 409 again and the dialog comes back.
  • One user typing in bursts on a throttled network (2.5 s latency, overlapping autosaves): all 6 saves get 204 and no dialog appears.
  • Peek overview: a stale save gets 409 and the dialog appears.
  • Image paste wasn't covered (there's no object storage in the local setup). Paragraphs go through the same save path.
  • The dev server logs a hydration warning and an uncaught undefined page error when the peek opens. Both happen on preview as well and aren't related to this change.

…g concurrent edits

Two editors open on the same work item silently overwrote each other's
description (last write wins), dropping text and images (makeplane#9995).

- API: PATCH accepts `base_description_html`, the description the editor
started from. Under a row lock it is compared with the stored description
(also after sanitization) and a stale save returns 409 DESCRIPTION_CONFLICT
with the current description. Requests without the field are unchanged.
- Web: DescriptionInput tracks its own base independently of store refetches,
serializes autosaves, and shows a dialog to load the latest version or keep
  editing when a save conflicts.
- i18n: conflict dialog strings for all locales.
- Clear pre-existing no-shadow warnings in the touched issue operation files.

📝 Walkthrough

Description saves now include their starting description as a base. The API rejects stale description updates with a conflict response. The editor handles that response and offers options to load the latest description or continue editing.

Changes: Description conflict handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Server-side stale description checks
apps/api/plane/utils/description_conflict.py, apps/api/plane/utils/content_validator.py, apps/api/plane/app/views/issue/base.py, apps/api/plane/tests/unit/utils/test_description_conflict.py, apps/api/plane/tests/contract/app/test_issue_description_conflict_app.py
The API normalizes and sanitizes the submitted base, then checks it against the stored description under a row lock. A stale save returns HTTP 409 with the conflict code and current description. Tests cover stale bases, matching bases, omitted bases, and non-description updates.
Editor save and conflict resolution
apps/web/components/editor/rich-text/description-input/*, packages/types/src/issues/issue.ts
The editor tracks the description base and serializes saves. It handles conflict responses, adopts the latest description in specified migration saves, and provides options to load the latest version or continue editing.
Issue update wiring and conflict messages
apps/web/components/issues/issue-detail/*, apps/web/components/issues/peek-overview/*, apps/web/store/issue/issue.store.ts, packages/i18n/src/locales/*/common.json
Issue update paths send the description base and pass conflict errors to the editor. The issue store does not save the request-only base field. Locale files add conflict dialog text.

Concurrent edits are protected from overwrite, but repeated conflict prompts can interrupt someone trying to preserve their draft. Block stale-draft autosaves before merging or accept this bounded usability issue.

Block autosaves after “Keep editing” leaves a stale draft.

When a save receives DESCRIPTION_CONFLICT, the queued save continues after the handler returns. It still uses the unchanged baseDescription.current, so the API rejects it with another 409. The “Keep editing” handler only closes the dialog. It does not update the base or cancel queued saves.

The English text says to load the latest version to continue and copy anything to keep first. Preserve that stale draft for manual copying, but block and discard queued autosaves until the user loads the latest version. Do not rebase the stale draft automatically.

This avoids repeated conflict dialogs and failed autosaves without overwriting the server description.

🐛 Bug: Concurrent edits silently overwrite work item descriptions (lost images/text)
