Important

On hold. The Management API is changing: a project's masterKey will no longer be returned by GET /projects, only at creation if at all, and a better error handling is in progress. This pull request waits for those decisions, then follows them. Design discussion in progress on how --project and the config file identify a Cloud project.

What

Add meili get projects, meili create projects, meili update projects and meili delete projects, the first Management API commands, with the foundation they need: the generated client, --management-token and --management-url, the body input of write commands, and the Management API error mapping.

Four commands in one pull request, at the maintainer's request; rule 10 says one per pull request. #8 and #9 were merged into this branch: the request named in a bare error, and the config file's cloudId with --project on the management commands, config update, config sync-with-cloud and create projects --add-to-config (ADR 0006).

Contract

  • The commands derive from their routes by the naming rules: GET /api/v2/projects and GET /api/v2/projects/{id} give get projects [--id] [--team-id], a bare array for the list as the API returns it; POST /api/v2/projects gives create projects --name --team-id --resource-id --ms-version, PATCH /api/v2/projects/{id} gives update projects --id --name (the field of the wrapped project object, rule 6), DELETE /api/v2/projects/{id} gives delete projects --id. No exception. The project sub-routes of the document, version, usage, cost, plan, master-key, derive to their own commands and are not in this change
  • Output goes through src/lib/output.ts, errors through src/lib/errors.ts: a non-2xx answer becomes a ManagementApiError, rendered as output.md says, type management, code from the status, message from the API's error field or else the document's description of that status
  • The command never waits for a human: delete projects runs as written, no confirmation
  • The command never speaks HTTP itself: the three commands call one function of the generated SDK each, with the client BaseCommand built

Tests

  • --help snapshots: three new ones; every other command's help gains the two management global flags, updated on purpose
  • JSON output snapshots: one success per route and one error (403 with the API's {"error": "Forbidden"}) per command; plus --data with a flag override, the 403 without body that falls back to the document's description, the missing token, the flag over the variable, the connection failure. --file, stdin, null and invalid input are unit-tested in test/lib/body.test.ts
  • Integration test: none for the Management API, by decision: Meilisearch Cloud does not run locally and the OpenAPI document is the source of truth. testing.md, CLAUDE.md and the skill say so now, replacing the local bootstrap they promised
  • pnpm lint, pnpm typecheck, pnpm test pass locally

Simplicity

  • Nothing in the diff exists for a case the API cannot produce, a caller that does not exist, or a generality nobody asked for (rule 16); the simplify pass ran on the diff
  • Shared code in src/lib/: clients/management.ts (createManagementClient, with the error interceptor), clients/http-trace.ts (the --debug trace, moved out of clients/meilisearch.ts and installed once by BaseCommand), body.ts (buildBody), errors.ts (ManagementApiError, cannotConnectMessage, isRecord shared with config.ts), config.ts (resolveManagementCredentials takes the flags), BaseCommand (managementClient, body(), the two global flags)

Docs

  • docs/contract/: commands.md (the two global flags in the table, the wrapped-body sentence of rule 8, two rows in the routes table), config.md (the management flags exist), testing.md (no Management API integration tests), CLAUDE.md, the skill, the README, the changeset
  • No accepted ADR was edited. ADR 0003 already decided the generated client, committed and checked by CI

Housekeeping

  • oclif.manifest.json regenerated
  • Changeset: two lines in .changeset/first-version.md
  • No new dependency. @hey-api/openapi-ts runs through pnpm dlx, pinned in scripts/gen-management.mjs, with TypeScript 5 beside it: the generator drives the TypeScript compiler API, which TypeScript 7 no longer ships, so it cannot be a dev dependency of this project

Notes for the reviewer

  • The generated client is committed under src/lib/clients/management/generated/, as ADR 0003 says, and CI regenerates it and fails on a difference. The document it comes from is private, and the generated code exposes every route and schema of the Management API in this public repository. The ADR took that decision; this is a reminder of it.
  • responses.gen.ts is the one addition to the generation: the description of every response of the document, by route and status. It is what output.md promises as the message of a Management API error whose body has no error field, for example a 422.
  • The generated client throws, and its error interceptor makes the contract errors: a non-2xx answer becomes a ManagementApiError, with the description looked up by the route the client knows (request.method and the URL template), and no answer at all becomes cli_network. A command is one SDK call and one output().
  • TypeScript 5 for the generator: it drives the TypeScript compiler API, which TypeScript 7 no longer ships. Pinning it through pnpm settings does not work, typescript is a peer dependency resolved from the project, so the generator runs through pnpm dlx with TypeScript 5 beside it, both pinned in scripts/gen-management.mjs.
  • Body input is now real: --file, --data and the body-field flags merge as output.md says, with null as JSON null. For a wrapped body, {"project": {…}}, --data gives the wrapped object, as the flags do; rule 8 says so now.
  • The document moved while this was written: CI regenerates the client from main of the Cloud repository and caught my stale copy. The creation body is no longer wrapped and its fields are required, the project's key is masterKey instead of apikey, and four sub-routes appeared. The last commit follows the current document; masterKey joins the redacted fields.
  • Gaps of the OpenAPI document, reported to the Cloud team rather than guessed: no operationId (the SDK functions are named postApiV2Projects); POST /projects takes its fields at the top level while PATCH /projects/{id} still wraps them in project; the body fields have no description or example; status is a free string; the error bodies are not described (the running API sends {"error": "…"} on 403, the 422 body is unknown); 401 is missing on most routes; fullPlan has no type; the path parameter is {id} on /projects/{id} and {projectId} on the sub-routes.
  • A naming conflict to decide before the project sub-routes: the rules turn the parent parameter {projectId} of version, usage, cost, plan and master-key into --project, which is now the global flag of the config file. Not in this change.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

…ands

The foundation comes with them: the client generated by
@hey-api/openapi-ts through pnpm dlx, with TypeScript 5 beside it since
the generator drives the compiler API that TypeScript 7 no longer ships;
the table of response descriptions of the document, for the message of
an error whose body says nothing; --management-token and
--management-url; the body of write commands from --file, --data and the
flags; the --debug trace shared by both clients.

The Management API has no integration test, by decision: Meilisearch
Cloud does not run locally and its OpenAPI document is the source of
truth. testing.md, CLAUDE.md and the skill say so now.

Three commands in one change, at the maintainer's request.

📝 Walkthrough

The CLI adds Cloud project create, update, and delete commands. It adds Management API client generation, credential flags, body-input handling, debug tracing, error mapping, tests, CI validation, and updated documentation.

Changes: Management API project commands

Layer / File(s) Summary
Management client generation and errors
openapi-ts.config.mjs, scripts/gen-management.mjs, src/lib/clients/management/*, src/lib/errors.ts, .github/workflows/ci.yml
The change configures Management API client generation, maps network and HTTP errors, and makes CI check generated files.
Shared command configuration and request support
src/lib/base-command.ts, src/lib/body.ts, src/lib/config.ts, src/lib/clients/http-trace.ts, src/lib/clients/meilisearch.ts
Management token and URL flags take precedence over environment values. Body inputs support --data, --file, stdin, field overrides, and JSON null. Debug tracing redacts headers and body fields, including masterKey.
Project command execution and manifest wiring
src/commands/{create,update,delete}/projects.ts, oclif.manifest.json, package.json, scripts/sort-manifest.mjs
The CLI registers project creation, update, and deletion routes with their flags and API metadata. The manifest-generation script sorts command entries.
Validation and test support
test/commands/{create,update,delete}/projects.test.ts, test/helpers/management-handlers.ts, test/lib/*, test/contract/*
Tests cover command output, requests, credentials, body handling, API errors, network errors, redaction, and invalid input.
Command contracts and release documentation
README.md, docs/contract/*, .changeset/first-version.md, .claude/skills/add-command/SKILL.md, CLAUDE.md, CONTRIBUTING.md
Documentation describes the project commands, Management API credentials, body-input rules, generated-client workflow, and Management API testing approach.

…rceptor

The client is generated with throwOnError and data responses: a command
calls one SDK function and prints what it returns, and the interceptor
registered in createManagementClient turns a non-2xx answer into a
ManagementApiError, with the document's description looked up from the
route the client already knows, and no answer at all into cli_network.
The request wrapper, its result type and the route literal repeated in
each command disappear. The body helpers merge into one buildBody.

Pinning TypeScript 5 under the generator through pnpm settings was
tried and does not work: typescript is a peer dependency of
@hey-api/openapi-ts, resolved from the project, which overrides and
packageExtensions do not change. The generator stays on pnpm dlx.

Preserve the documented project wrapper before sending the request.

buildBody preserves a wrapped input, and both project commands wrap the result again. A documented input such as {"project":{"name":"demo"}} therefore becomes {"project":{"project":{"name":"demo"}}} and can be rejected by the Management API schema.

Add explicit wrapper context to the shared helper. This preserves flag precedence, flag-only bodies, and existing unwrapped inputs without applying unsafe automatic unwrapping to other body types.

CI regenerates the client from the document on main, which moved on:
POST /projects takes name, teamId and resourceId at the top level, all

The generated client calls fetch with a Request, so --debug printed no

oclif manifest lists commands in directory-scan order, which differs
between machines and between runs on the CI runner: the same committed

Pass wrapped --data and --file bodies through at the correct level.

If a user supplies --data '{"project":{"name":"renamed"}}', this.body(...) returns that object and Line 34 wraps it again. The PATCH request sends {"project":{"project":{"name":"renamed"}}} instead of the documented body. Parse the complete request body first, then apply --name to its project.name field. Add a test with wrapped --data input. The current test covers only --name.

Review comment at @src/commands/update/projects.ts around lines 27 - 29:
Update the request-body construction in the project update command so wrapped
--data and --file bodies are passed through at the documented level, then apply
--name to project.name without nesting the project object again. Add a test for
wrapped --data input alongside the existing --name coverage.

MEILI_MANAGEMENT_URL set to https://api.meilisearch.dev/api/v2 made the
client call /api/v2/api/v2/projects, which answers 404 with no body, and
the CLI said only "answered HTTP 404". The message now carries the
request, "HTTP 404 to POST https://…/api/v2/api/v2/projects", so that
the doubled prefix shows. No check on the URL's format: the error says
what was called, the user decides.

…udId

An entry may carry cloudId, the project's id in Meilisearch Cloud, and
--project <name> gives it to update projects and delete projects; with
--id it is a usage error, without cloudId a config error that names the
ways to set it, on a command that takes no project a usage error. Three
explicit ways set it: create projects --add-to-config, config add and
the new config update with --project-cloud-id, and the new config
sync-with-cloud, which lists the projects the token sees, sets cloudId
by URL, adds the missing entries named after their project, never
writes a key and never removes an entry. ADR 0006 records the rule: the
Management API is consulted only when the command line asks for it.
The maintainer guide no longer keeps "Cloud" to prose.

…config commands

projectFlagForRoute in api-naming.ts says which flag of a Management
API route --project <name> can fill; BaseCommand.init and the contract
test both use it, so update teams --project would be refused like
create projects --project. The --id/--project arbitration moves to
config.ts beside resolveProjectConnection, with its unit tests. The
"name already exists" check and the agent warning of the config
commands are written once. Test helpers tempConfig and readJson replace
the copied setup. From the simplify pass.

…now "project limit reached"

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A project the file does not know is ignored: without its key, which the
API does not return, an entry would serve no Meilisearch command. The
report loses "added", the name collision cannot happen any more, and
ADR 0006 records the alternative as rejected.

…apiKey

Creation is the one moment the API returns it, and an entry without its
key serves no Meilisearch command. sync-with-cloud still never writes
a key. ADR 0006 records it.
