What a user gets

A community agent-app preset can now declare a session block (format 2). When it does, an app such as OpenCode resumes its conversation through rig launch or a restore instead of starting launch-only: OpenRig asks the app whether the saved session still exists, and only then types the resume command into the seat's pane. When the app says the conversation is gone, OpenRig starts nothing and asks (status awaiting-decision) instead of opening a blank session. rig ps --nodes labels each seat ; resume declared|not declared and rig agent-app list says Its preset declares resume, ... for presets with the block. Format 1 presets behave exactly as before (launch-only refusals word for word).

How you verified it

All commands with export PATH="/usr/bin:$PATH" (node v24.21.0, satisfies engines). Full detail in openrig-notes/NOTES.md §M11.

  • npm run build (repo root): exit 0.
  • npm run lint: exit 0 (12-line log).
  • packages/cli: npx vitest run test/agent-app-line.test.ts → 2 passed (2).
  • packages/daemon: npx vitest run test/agent-app-sessions.test.ts test/agent-app-session-resume.test.ts test/agent-app-runtime.test.ts → 3 files, 78 passed (78) = 24 + 12 + 42.
  • packages/daemon (alone): npx vitest run test/agent-app-session.integration.test.ts → 2 passed (2), ~51 s (resume works end to end; missing conversation → awaiting-decision).
  • packages/daemon (alone, separate run): npx vitest run test/agent-app-runtime.integration.test.ts → 10 passed, 1 failed (11): refuses to send once the app has exited to a shell — same test that fails on unchanged ca1ee698 in this container (fish login shell / 1 s timing; M1 baseline), no src changed since.
  • Full daemon suite: Test Files 4 failed | 1043 passed | 2 skipped, Tests 6 failed | 17660 passed (~229 s). Stripped comm -13 baseline-failing-files.txt after-failing-files.txt prints only test/staging-docker-invoker.test.ts, which is byte-identical to base (git show ca1ee698:... | diff - → identical) and passes 15/15 alone — a parallel-load flake (brief §4.4 class), not a branch bug. All other after-failures match the M1 baseline environmentally.
  • node scripts/check-docs-guard.mjs: rc=0.
  • Could not run: an 11/11 agent-app-runtime.integration pass (environment: fish login shell + timing, fails identically at base) — recorded, not chased per rule 7.

Anything you were unsure about

From brief §4.5:

  1. Environment for list and exists. They run in the daemon's process environment (PATH, HOME), not the seat's pane. On a real machine the daemon may have a different PATH from the user's shell, so an app found in the pane may be missing for the daemon. Then exists returns null (resume goes ahead) and list returns null (nothing captured). Nothing breaks silently in a dangerous way. (M12 step-1 table confirms the null-goes-ahead rule at agent-app-runtime-adapter.ts:76 and agent-app-sessions.ts:75-78.)
  2. nodes.cwd is not always absolute (M1 answer: rig-repository.ts:420 stores opts?.cwd verbatim; legacy instantiate at rigspec-instantiator.ts:120, claim-service.ts:698, self-attach-service.ts:184 can store relative paths). Consequence: captureAgentAppSessionId matches the app's directory against {cwd, realpath(cwd)} — a relative stored cwd likely matches nothing, capture returns null, seat stays as-was (safe direction, no token recorded).
  3. A slow list on OpenCode 1.x (~19 s) runs inside snapshot and rig down for each agent-app seat with no token yet. Bounded by the 60 s timeout (agent-app-sessions.ts:16), but it makes those commands slower. No caching added (per brief).
  4. Fill-null-only means no refresh after the app switches sessions (e.g. OpenCode's /new). The token stays on the first session. Intended for now.
  5. Real OpenCode was never run through OpenRig. Only the synthetic app was (test/fixtures/agent-app/synth-session-app.mjs, which behaves like OpenCode 1.x/2.0 in the four ways §4.3 lists).

From M12 step 1: no gaps — every §4.1 statement, §4.2 surprise, §2-item-8 rule and M5–M7 step maps to a code/test line (table in NOTES.md §M12). Nothing needed a fix commit.

Template note: the brief cites .github/pull_request_template.md, but the repo only has .github/PULL_REQUEST_TEMPLATE.md (uppercase); the four headings above are the real template's headings verbatim.

Rebase note: git fetch upstream main && git rebase upstream/main succeeded cleanly (9/9, no conflicts); the branch was rebased onto upstream/main 48fe7827 before pushing. One observation on the new base: packages/cli: npx tsc --noEmit -p . reports 4 pre-existing errors in bundle-behaviour.ts and commands/slack.ts — files this branch never touches (not in the branch diff) — so they come from upstream movement, not this work. packages/daemon tsc is clean; npm run lint was green on the ca1ee698 base (M11).

If this is security-related

Session ids are credential-class (see resume-token-validation.ts header):

  • Argv-only execution with no shell: spawn(argv[0], argv.slice(1), { shell: false }) (agent-app-sessions.ts:56); the only string typed into a pane is built by shellLineFor (every element single-quoted, shell-quote.ts:2-4).

  • Id floor plus anchored pattern: SAFE_ID (agent-app-sessions.ts:15) rejects leading -/. (never an option or path) and caps at 200 chars; then the preset's id_pattern must be ^...$-anchored and compile (agent-app-presets.ts:113), enforced in checkAgentAppSessionId (agent-app-sessions.ts:24-29). resume/exists must hold {session_id} as a whole element, never the program (agent-app-presets.ts:93-104); list must not hold it.

  • Ids never in errors: all error strings are static literals (agent-app-sessions.ts:25,27,28; agent-app-runtime-adapter.ts:65,67,73,77,87 — ${checked.error} is one of the static literals, ${this.runtime} is the preset name, ${sent.message} is tmux status). Verified by reading; ps --nodes exposes only resumeTokenPresent: Boolean(...) (ps.ts:693-695).

  • export output never read: exists runs with keepStdout: false / stdio ignore (agent-app-sessions.ts:77, 56-57); list stdout is capped at 1 MiB (tooLarge → null, :18,:65,:104).

  • One concern per PR; no version bump; no CHANGELOG.md edit

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Community agent-app presets can now declare session continuity, including safe session validation, resume commands, and optional session listing and existence checks.
    • Supported apps can resume saved conversations when available. Missing conversations prompt for a decision rather than starting an unintended session.
    • Agent-app listings indicate whether resume is supported and show resume details when declared.
    • Session IDs can be captured automatically from app session lists when a unique match is found.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance on preset formats, session configuration, and restore behavior.

📝 Walkthrough

Format-2 community agent-app presets can declare session commands. The daemon can capture a uniquely matched session, save its resume token, check the session before resuming, and await a decision when the saved conversation is confirmed missing. Agent-app listings now report resume declarations.

Changes: Agent-app session continuity

Layer / File(s) Summary
Preset and session command contract
docs/reference/agent-app-presets.md, packages/daemon/src/domain/agent-app-presets.ts, packages/daemon/src/domain/agent-app-sessions.ts, packages/daemon/test/agent-app-sessions.test.ts, packages/daemon/test/fixtures/agent-app/synth-session-app.mjs, packages/daemon/test/agent-app-runtime.test.ts
Format-2 presets can define resume, existence-check, and list commands. The daemon validates session IDs, runs commands, and selects a unique eligible session. Tests cover preset validation, session handling, and format compatibility.
Snapshot-time session capture
packages/daemon/src/domain/session-registry.ts, packages/daemon/src/domain/resume-metadata-refresher.ts, packages/daemon/test/agent-app-session-resume.test.ts
The refresher can capture a session from an app’s list command when no resume token exists. The registry supplies session metadata and IDs held by other seats.
Launch and restore using saved sessions
packages/daemon/src/adapters/agent-app-runtime-adapter.ts, packages/daemon/src/domain/restore-orchestrator.ts, packages/daemon/test/agent-app-session-resume.test.ts, packages/daemon/test/agent-app-session.integration.test.ts
The runtime validates saved IDs and checks whether the conversation exists before resuming. Restore allows resume when the preset and saved token support it; a confirmed missing session results in an awaiting-decision outcome.
Resume status in app listings
packages/daemon/src/domain/agent-app-presets.ts, packages/daemon/src/routes/agent-apps.ts, packages/cli/src/commands/agent-app.ts, packages/cli/src/commands/ps.ts, packages/cli/test/agent-app-line.test.ts
Preset labels and app-list responses report resume declarations. CLI output includes the declaration when present.

Describe resume as a capability, not a guarantee.

A declared session block does not guarantee that a saved session exists or that the app can resume it. This sentence promises continuation even when restore must await a decision because the conversation is missing. Say that restore can continue the conversation when a saved session is available.

The PR objective defines resume as conditional on a saved session being available.

Reject session rows without a directory.

When the app omits directory, parseSessionList converts it to null, and pickSeatSession accepts that row. A single recent session from another directory can therefore be saved for this seat and resumed later. The documented capture rule requires the session to be in the seat's directory and says to record nothing when that cannot be determined.

Suggested fix
-    && (row.directory === null || seat.cwds.has(row.directory))
+    && row.directory !== null
+    && seat.cwds.has(row.directory)

Distinguish preset declaration from captured-token eligibility.

A format-2 preset can reach this branch with no captured token. The branch checks agentAppSeatResumes(...) before the later missing-token guard, so it reports the preset as launch-only even when the preset declares session continuity. Apply the distinction in both snapshotLaunchOutcome and the restore error. Keep launch-only text only for presets without a session block.

Update snapshotLaunchOutcome and the restore error branch to distinguish whether
the agent-app preset declares session continuity from whether a resume token was
captured. Show launch-only text only when the preset lacks a session
declaration; otherwise report the missing captured session or unsupported token
type as applicable.

Snapshot capture can save a sibling seat's conversation as this seat's resume token.

pickSeatSession excludes only IDs in heldIds. agentAppSessionIdsHeldByOthers returns only tokens that rows have already recorded. Other live seats that run the same app in the same directory and have not captured a token yet are not considered.

Example trigger: seats A and B both run the app with cwd: ., which is a common value in rig specs.

  1. Seat A is launched but has not received a message, so the app has no session for A yet.
  2. Seat B receives a message, and the app creates session S_B.
  3. refresh() processes A before B. A's only candidate is S_B: it was created after A launched, it is in A's directory, and nobody holds it yet.
  4. A records S_B. When B is processed, S_B is held by A, so B records nothing.

Result: a restore or rig launch of seat A opens seat B's conversation. Seat B is left with no token. The exists check passes because S_B really exists, so nothing reports the mix-up.

Fix: treat a session as ambiguous when another live seat could also own it. One way:

  • Collect the live agent-app seats that use the same runtime and the same resolved cwd and have no token.
  • Pass the earliest launch time of the other seats into the selection.
  • Refuse to capture when any of those seats launched at or before row.created.

A simpler option: refuse to capture whenever more than one token-less seat shares the app and cwd.

Update captureAgentAppSessionId and its refresh flow to account for other live,
token-less seats using the same runtime and resolved cwd; do not capture a
candidate session if another such seat launched at or before that session was
created. Pass the relevant launch-time constraint into pickSeatSession or reject
the ambiguous candidate before selecting it.

Thanks for your patience, @BillyOutlast. This update is later than our first reply here suggested.

Since then we've posted the plan for community harnesses on #43: one plug-in point that every community harness connects through. We plan to take the full plug-in work forward right after 0.7.0 ships, with some groundwork already in place, and we'll post the draft contract for plug-in authors on #43 first, so people can comment before the full integration is built.

Here's how #1497 relates to it. On main today, a community harness runs from an installed preset and is launch-only: OpenRig refuses resume and fork for it. #1497 adds resume through a second preset format. How a harness declares resume is part of what the plug-in contract has to settle, so we'd rather your resume work land on the plug-in point, credited to you, than be redone after it. We haven't decided yet whether any of #1497 goes in before that contract. Please leave the PR open as it is; you needn't change anything for now.

Two points from our review still stand:

  • Presets stay plain data, so OpenRig doesn't run commands a preset declares, such as list and exists.
  • OpenRig shouldn't quietly swap in a fresh conversation when the one it meant to resume is gone. If OpenRig can't tell a failed resume from a fresh start, that harness stays launch-only.

What would help most now, posted on #43, is this. For OpenCode, on the version you use:

  1. Can it start a new conversation with an ID the caller chooses, and does it then really use that ID?
  2. What does it do when asked to resume an ID that no longer exists: show a recognisable message, exit with an error, or silently open a new conversation?
