feat(gateway): quiet hours hold routine asks and release them when quiet ends - #1606
Conversation
…iet ends While a person's quiet window is on, a routine ask that would post is held (a new delivery outcome, `hold`, in every class including A), recorded on its row with one exact note the 4h/daily flush can't select. Urgent asks decide exactly as outside quiet. One release job per quiet window, on the watchdog jobs table, reads the current quiet state each time it runs: while quiet is on it does nothing; once it's off, each held ask that is still current is posted individually through the ordinary gateway path, as itself and without a mention, and anything whose situation changed gets a visible disposition. The digest flush holds pre-quiet digest members while quiet is on. Outside quiet every decision is unchanged. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…ient in the digest flush A release dispatched but not yet posted (buffered, then replayed after a restart) posted without re-checking. The gateway now asks the same question as the release job at post time: if the recipient's quiet is back on, the ask stays held for the window's job; if the row, the recipient or the posting threshold changed, it gets the job's disposition. Nothing posts into changed circumstances. The digest flush checked the first registered person's quiet state for every ask. It now decides per ask from the actual recipient, holding only asks whose recipient is quiet, under that recipient's window. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

When the human registry couldn't be loaded, the release check found no current alert and gave a live held ask a permanent disposition, on both the release job and the gateway's post-time check, so it never posted. A registry, alert list or quiet-state read that fails now decides nothing: nothing is written or posted, and the window's release job, still active because the ask has no receipt or disposition, retries on its next pass. A quiet-state read that failed was taken as "not quiet", so a routine ask could post during quiet. Only a missing quiet-hours table reads as not quiet now; any other failure leaves the ask undecided and the outbound sweep offers it again. The operator rung, which only escalates, ignores a failed quiet read. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
When a decision was deferred (the quiet state couldn't be read), the gateway released the outbound sweep's in-flight guard synchronously inside dispatch, and the sweep then added the key after dispatch returned, so the ask was never offered again until a restart. The guard was also released by qitem id while it's keyed by notification key. The sweep now marks an ask in flight before dispatching (and unmarks it if dispatch refuses), and the deferred path releases it by its notification key, so the next sweep offers it and decides afresh. …weep Since the outbound sweep marks an ask in flight before dispatching, a dispatch that threw left the mark set until a restart, and the throw ended the sweep. Each dispatch is now caught: if its decision is pending in the durable buffer, the mark stays (replay owns it; a second decision would post twice); otherwise it's cleared and the next sweep offers the ask again. Either way the throw is reported and the sweep continues. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
After a dispatch threw, the sweep cleared the ask's in-flight mark unless the buffer showed a pending decision for it, and meant an unreadable buffer to count as pending. But the buffer's read returns an empty list for an unreadable or corrupt file, so that case cleared the mark and the next sweep could decide the ask a second time. The sweep now reads the buffer strictly (empty only when the file doesn't exist, a throw when it can't be read or parsed), so "can't tell" keeps the mark. Every other reader of the buffer is unchanged. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The strict buffer read began with existsSync, which reports "absent" for any stat error, so a stored decision behind a directory that can't be searched read as "nothing pending", and a thrown dispatch could then be decided twice. The strict read now reads the file directly and treats only ENOENT as no file; every other failure throws, so the ask stays in flight. The lenient read used everywhere else is unchanged. …user The tests faked an unreadable buffer with chmod 000, which root ignores: run as root, the parent-directory case failed and the unreadable-file case passed by the wrong branch. They now use faults that fail for every user and are never ENOENT: a directory where the buffer file should be (EISDIR), and a regular file where its directory should be (ENOTDIR), each restored afterwards. A missing file with its directory present is checked alongside a missing directory: both are still "nothing pending". Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…into quiet A hold note and its window's release job were separate writes, so a failure between them could leave an ask marked held that nothing would release, and the digest flush skips held asks. They are now one SQLite transaction (the note's events are delivered after commit), and the release job re-reads its held asks just before retiring so a hold made during its pass keeps it running. A digest decided before quiet began and replayed during it (a failed post, then a restart) was posted without a quiet check. The replayed digest post now holds its routine members for the window and still posts any that are now escalations, trimming an aggregate to what it carries. The release job's "quiet is still on" pass is now a quiet skip: no history row or event every minute of a window. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…te guard The guard keeps the set of in-transaction queue writers closed by call site. Quiet hours added one: the quiet-release policy writes a transition note (the quiet-hold note, or the post-time "release returned" note), never a state, inside the same transaction that arms the window's release job. Declare it, and move the guard's pinned site count from 12 to 13. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…r acks a decision A replayed decision could be held for quiet hours, trimmed, or acked under its original id before anything asked whether an earlier attempt had already landed with its response lost. The release then posted the ask a second time, and a trimmed post reused the original id with different content, so a later reconcile could stamp receipts for members it never posted. - Where a gate would hold, trim, defer or ack instead of delivering (a digest post, a quiet-hours release post, a re-decided log/hold/digest/defer), it first asks the reconciler about an earlier attempt: found goes to delivery unchanged (receipts, no repost), an unreadable scan retains the decision, absent carries on. Ordinary posts are unchanged and reconcile once. - A decision only ever carries its original payload. Digest members already posted or held are skipped; what's left of a changed digest goes out as a new decision with a derived id and its own receipts, enqueued before the original is acked, so a replay converges on the same id. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…e, not straight to delivery When a gate asked about an earlier attempt and the history scan couldn't finish without finding it, the decision went straight to delivery, whose at-least-once rule posts once. During quiet hours that posted routine content into quiet: an attempted digest replayed into quiet, or a release replayed after quiet came back on, skipping its post-time recheck. Only a found attempt now goes to delivery from a gate. An unfinished scan goes on through the gate like an absent one: where the gate posts, delivery reconciles and keeps its at-least-once rule; where it holds, that post waits for the release. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…d finishes as itself A gate's "found" checked only the first message of a post split into parts. It then handed the decision to delivery, which posts every missing part, so a routine post whose first part landed before quiet finished its remaining parts during quiet. - The reconcile check now reports a multipart post whose first part is in Slack, but which isn't recorded complete, as partial, not found. - Outside quiet, a partial post finishes through delivery as before. Held for quiet, its routine members are held and the original decision stays in the buffer, never trimmed. - The window's release finishes that original decision under its own id: only the missing parts, in the primary's thread and channel, with the complete receipt once every part has landed. A restart in between holds it again during quiet and finishes it after. - A multipart release that partly posted and finds quiet back on is declined; the job's next dispatch of the same id finishes its own parts. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…resolved A partly posted original held for quiet stays in the buffer for its release to finish. When the release disposed of the ask instead (closed, superseded, recipient changed, below the posting threshold), nothing removed the original, and a later replay outside quiet posted its remaining parts anyway. - At the start of delivery, a post whose parts were started but not finished is acked without posting once every ask it carries has a posted receipt or a quiet-release disposition. This is a store and database check, with no Slack read. - When a release is declined at post time, a retained original carrying only resolved asks is drained then, rather than at the next restart. - While any member of a digest is still owed, the post finishes whole: its text is fixed by the recorded cuts, and its first part already showed every member. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…afresh, and has one finisher Three gaps in finishing a post whose first part is already in Slack: - Quiet was inferred from the delivery outcome: "log" (below the posting dial) is decided before quiet is looked at, so a replay after the dial was raised during quiet finished the post into quiet. The ruled path now reads the recipient's actual quiet state: on, hold it as a continuation; off (or an escalation), finish it; unreadable, retain it. A held continuation records a continuation note in the same transaction as its hold, and the release finishes a post that already started instead of dropping it for the raised threshold. Closed, superseded and reassigned asks are still disposed of. - A retained original whose history read failed counted as no continuation, so the release posted the ask again from the start. It now posts nothing and is acked like a declined release; the window's job dispatches it again. - The original's replay and its release, or several members' releases, could both find a part missing and both post it. Delivering a decision is now exclusive per decision id within the process: a second caller joins the first and takes its result. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…t be made When the quiet-hours read throws while deciding a delivery, the decision was acked so the outbound sweep could offer the ask again. That's right for a decision never attempted. For one already attempted, perhaps partly in Slack, it dropped the buffered post's missing parts and let the sweep offer the ask under a new id, posting it again from the start. An attempted decision is now retained with nothing posted; its replay decides again once quiet hours read. The check reads the delivery stores only, with no Slack call on a failure path. A never-attempted decision is acked as before. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…f; remove the quiet continuation A post whose first part is found in Slack, but which isn't complete, now finishes through delivery from every gate (digest, re-decided outcome, release), without reading quiet hours: only its own remaining parts, under their original part ids, in its original thread and channel. A post that was attempted but reads absent or maybe hasn't started, and goes through the quiet gate like any other. That removes the machinery that held and continued a started post during quiet: the retained original and its not-ok hold, the continuation note and the release's threshold exemption, the release finishing a retained original (and its unreadable branch), the drain rules, and the per-decision lock whose race went with them. Reconcile-before-gate, the derived kept decision, the owned skip, the atomic hold and job, the complete receipt after every part, and retaining an attempted decision whose quiet read fails all stay. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The digest gate's quiet-read catch acked the digest whatever its history. For an attempted digest that reads absent or maybe, that dropped the original from the buffer, and the next flush minted the ask again from the row as it is now, so a repost could carry a newer payload than the one that may already be in Slack. An attempted digest is now retained with nothing posted, by the same store-only check the ruled path uses. A never-attempted digest is still acked, and its members keep their digest notes for the next flush. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Also run, one file at a time: the 53 existing daemon test files that import the gateway, the delivery engine, the digest and deferral
