📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughInclusive and exclusive canonicalization now render processing-instruction nodes with their target and optional data. Older signatures may become incompatible, and external uses of the public canonicalizers have not been fully assessed. Retained concerns Security review detailsSecurity Blast Radius

Security impact
A processing instruction inside a signed reference was serialized as its data alone. Replacing signed text with a PI carrying the same data therefore left the reference digest unchanged.
The regression uses a signed SAML-shaped Assertion with
<saml:NameID>admin@victim.com.evil.com</saml:NameID>, an enveloped-signature transform, exclusive C14N, and a verifier configured with a knownpublicCert. Changing only the NameID content toadmin@victim.com<?x .evil.com?>made the oldcheckSignature()returntrue, while the parsed NameID'stextContentbecameadmin@victim.com. The verifier loads the Signature from that tampered document. This mismatch affects callers that read the original DOM after
checkSignature(). Callers that instead parsegetSignedReferences(), as node-saml does, read the signed canonical bytes and do not encounter this specific mismatch.Fix
Render PIs inside referenced content with their target,
<? ?>delimiters, and a separator before nonempty data in inclusive and exclusive C14N, including their WithComments variants, as C14N 1.0 §2.3 requires. The regression exercisesSignedXmlthrough the public signing and verification APIs and checks the resulting DOM value. The README records the canonical output change.Verification
checkSignature()tampering cases accepted changed XML, and all four direct PI output cases differed.expected true to be false; the original signature verified and the tampered NameID'stextContentassertion passed.7823e9e323c1cf9894c6018bac699ec5216680ff: upstream CI passes lint and tests on Node 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, and latest.npm cicompiles TypeScript throughprepare. CodeQL andcodecov/patch(100%) pass.Release compatibility
Canonical bytes change for references containing PIs. Existing signatures over such XML may stop verifying, and mixed older/newer signers and verifiers may disagree. There is no legacy fallback because it would preserve the collision. Exported APIs and types are unchanged.
