Implements a beginner-friendly property documentation system independent of the Open Food Facts wiki, enabling web components and mobile apps to dynamically generate appropriate input forms and display property information in knowledge panels.

Core Implementation

  • YAML schema in data/properties/ with 10 example properties (scoville_scale, storage_capacity, organic, caffeine_content, etc.)
  • Three API endpoints:
    • GET /properties - List/search properties
    • GET /properties/{key} - Full documentation
    • GET /properties/{key}/knowledge-panel - Panel configuration
  • Pydantic models with comprehensive type hints (PropertyDocumentation, PropertyList)
  • Property loader with module-level caching (55ms → 0.0014ms) and specific exception handling

Property Schema Features

Each YAML file supports:

  • Multilingual names/descriptions (EN, FR, ES, DE, IT, NL, PT)
  • Icons and value-specific images (e.g., 16GB/32GB storage icons)
  • Wikidata linking (property IDs and URLs)
  • Value validation (permitted values, formats, units)
  • Input widget configuration (slider, select, multiselect, color, etc.)
  • Knowledge panel display settings (badges, gauges, thresholds)
  • Category scoping (en:spices, en:beverages)

Integration Example

// Fetch property and generate input widget
const prop = await fetch('/properties/scoville_scale').then(r => r.json());

// prop.input_widget = { type: "slider", min: 0, max: 100000, step: 100 }
// prop.name = { en: "Scoville Scale", fr: "Échelle de Scoville" }
// prop.permitted_values = [{ value: "0-100", label: { en: "Mild" } }, ...]

const widget = createSliderInput(prop, userLanguage);

Documentation

  • data/properties/README.md - YAML schema specification
  • data/properties/INTEGRATION.md - Web component and mobile app integration guide with Flutter/React Native examples
  • PROPERTY_SYSTEM.md - Architecture and implementation details

No database migrations required. Properties are read-only YAML files that can be updated without code changes.

Comment thread tests/test_properties.py
assert prop is not None
assert prop.wikidata_property == "P5196"
assert prop.wikidata_url is not None
assert "wikidata.org" in prop.wikidata_url

Check failure

Code scanning / CodeQL

Incomplete URL substring sanitization High test

The string
wikidata.org
may be at an arbitrary position in the sanitized URL.

Copilot Autofix

AI 4 months ago

Use proper URL parsing and assert on the hostname rather than checking for a substring in the full URL string.

Best fix in this file:

  • In tests/test_properties.py, import urlparse from urllib.parse.
  • In test_property_wikidata_links, replace the substring assertion with:
    • parse the URL (parsed = urlparse(prop.wikidata_url))
    • assert hostname exists
    • assert hostname is exactly wikidata.org or ends with .wikidata.org (to allow valid subdomains safely)

This keeps behavior aligned with the original intent (“URL belongs to Wikidata”) while removing the incomplete substring sanitization pattern flagged by CodeQL.
