DNM until openshift/apiserver-library-go#167 merges and is vendored. Adds an e2e that checks image policy rewrites spec.volumes[].image.reference to the tag's digest pull spec when an ImageStream has local lookup on.

Why

Changes

  • Add should update image volume references when local names are on to the [Feature:ImageLookup] Image policy suite in test/extended/images/resolve.go.
  • It creates a Pod and a Deployment with an image volume referencing busybox:latest, asserts both are rewritten, and waits for the Pod to run.
  • Tagged [FeatureGate:ImageVolume], matching test/extended/node/image_volume.go.

Testing

Review notes

AI-assisted. The changes and this description were produced with the tool and checked before posting.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Added end-to-end coverage for resolving locally imported images in Pod image volumes and Deployment pod templates. The checks also verify that Pods using image volumes reach a running state. No user-facing behavior changes are included.

Walkthrough

The extended images tests now verify local lookup for busybox:latest and check that its imported reference resolves in Pod and Deployment image volumes.

Changes

Image volume resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Wait for local image import
test/extended/images/resolve.go
The test enables local lookup for busybox:latest and polls for its imported reference for up to two minutes.
Check Pod and Deployment resolution
test/extended/images/resolve.go
The test checks the image-volume reference in a Pod and Deployment pod template. It skips Pod verification if the container image does not resolve to the imported reference, and waits for the Pod to run.

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Other

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 39903

On mixed-architecture clusters, the new test can fail despite working image lookup; a stalled image-tag request can also hold up the test run. Fix both before merging.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the Jira issue OCPBUGS-127118 and says the PR adds a test for image volume local name resolution. The raw summary confirms the change adds an ImageVolume feature test in test/extended/images/resolve.go that enables local image lookup for busybox:latest and checks resolution in a Pod image volume and a Deployment pod template. The title is specific and matches the main change. It does not describe a fix, and the objectives describe a test-only change, which the title reflects accurately.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 1 files.

Full details: Stable And Deterministic Test Names

Explanation

The pull request adds one Ginkgo test with the static title should update image volume references when local names are on [FeatureGate:ImageVolume][apigroup:image.openshift.io]. The title contains no generated names, timestamps, UUIDs, node or namespace values, IP addresses, or legacy metadata tokens. It is descriptive of the behavior under test.

Full details: Microshift Test Compatibility

Explanation

The added test is explicitly tagged [apigroup:image.openshift.io] in its Ginkgo name at test/extended/images/resolve.go:211. The test uses the ImageStream API through oc.ImageClient() at line 220, which is unavailable on MicroShift, but the custom check explicitly exempts tests with an unavailable API-group tag because MicroShift CI skips them. The [FeatureGate:ImageVolume] text is a test-selection tag, not a FeatureGate resource assumption.

Full details: Single Node Openshift (Sno) Test Compatibility

Explanation

PASS: The added test creates one Pod and a Deployment with the default single replica, and waits for the Pod to run. It does not count or require multiple nodes, use affinity or topology constraints, test failover, drain/rescheduling, scaling, node roles, or multi-endpoint ingress. No SNO skip is required because the test has no stated multi-node assumption.

Full details: Topology-Aware Scheduling Compatibility

Explanation

PASS: The PR changes only test/extended/images/resolve.go and adds an end-to-end test. Its Pod and Deployment specs contain no anti-affinity, topology spread constraints, node selectors/affinity, tolerations, replica-count logic, or PDBs. The Deployment uses default scheduling and does not assume control-plane or worker nodes. No topology-unsafe scheduling constraint is introduced.

Full details: Ote Binary Stdout Contract

Explanation

The pull request adds only an It body and an import in test/extended/images/resolve.go. The added code has no fmt.Print*, log.Print*, klog, os.Stdout, or output configuration calls. Its g.By calls run inside the test case and are explicitly allowed. The existing package-level g.Describe registration is unchanged.

Full details: Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility

Explanation

The new test adds no IPv4 addresses, IPv4-only parsing, IP-based URL construction, or network policy assumptions. It uses the standard Kubernetes BusyBox e2e image helper, which the OpenShift test runner maps to the configured test repository via KUBE_TEST_REPO. The test then uses the cluster ImageStream and internal image reference. It does not require direct public-internet connectivity.

Full details: No-Weak-Crypto

Explanation

PASS: The pull request adds only image-volume e2e test logic in test/extended/images/resolve.go. The added code uses Kubernetes/OpenShift clients, image references, pod waiting, and equality assertions. It does not add MD5, SHA-1, DES, RC4, 3DES, Blowfish, ECB mode, custom cryptography, or non-constant-time secret/token comparisons.

Full details: Container-Privileges

Explanation

The PR adds only an e2e Go test. Its Pod and Deployment specs define an image volume, a busybox container, command, mount, and termination settings. The changed code does not set privileged, hostPID, hostNetwork, hostIPC, SYS_ADMIN, allowPrivilegeEscalation, or a root user.

Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs

Explanation

The new test can expose internal hostnames in test logs. Line 228 formats the API error with %v, and Gomega equality failures at lines 256 and 275 print the actual and expected image references. internalImageReference comes from DockerImageReference and can contain the cluster's internal registry hostname.

Resolution

Use static failure messages that do not include lastErr, and compare image references through a boolean or another assertion that does not render the reference values. Apply this to both image-volume checks.

Full details: Test Structure And Quality

Explanation

The added It block violates the cleanup, timeout, and assertion-message requirements. It creates Pod resolve-image-volume at resolve.go:247 and Deployment resolve-image-volume at resolve.go:260, but registers no cleanup; the test can leave both resources behind, including when g.Skip runs at line 254. Both Create calls use the package ctx, which is context.Background(), so they have no operation timeout. The image-import poll is bounded to two minutes, and WaitForPodNameRunningInNamespace uses the helper's bounded podStartTimeout, so those waits are acceptable. The new assertions at lines 213, 215, 251, 256, 257, 274, and 275 have no meaningful diagnostic messages. The Pod and Deployment checks cover the same image-volume rewrite behavior, and the missing ote.Informing() option is only a recommendation.

Resolution

Register cleanup immediately after each successful resource creation, preferably with the admin client and a bounded cleanup context or the repository's standard cleanup helper. Use bounded contexts for both Pod and Deployment creation. Add diagnostic messages to every new command, create, field, and readiness assertion, such as the resource name and expected image reference.

Preserve the multi-architecture image.

oc tag defaults to Legacy import mode, which selects one platform from a manifest list. On a mixed-architecture cluster, the scheduler can select a worker that cannot run that image, so the Pod wait fails even when image lookup works. Import with --import-mode=PreserveOriginal. Apply the polling deadline to the request.

PollImmediate cannot interrupt the Get call, which uses context.Background(). If the API read stalls, the test can exceed its two-minute limit and block the test run. Use PollUntilContextTimeout and pass its callback context to Get. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

As per path instructions: “context.Context for cancellation and timeouts.”

  • pull-ci-openshift-origin-main-e2e-aws-ovn-image-registry

Reason: PR adds a new e2e test in test/extended/images/resolve.go to the [sig-imageregistry][Feature:ImageLookup] Image policy suite, verifying that image policy admission rewrites spec.volumes[].image.reference for image volumes when local lookup is enabled (OCPBUGS-127118). The test creates a Pod and a Deployment with image volumes and asserts the references are rewritten to the internal digest pull spec, then waits for the Pod to reach Running. Selected: e2e-aws-ovn-image-registry — annotation directly matches test/extended/images, and workflow openshift-e2e-aws-image-registry runs the [sig-imageregistry] suite that contains this test. This is the most targeted job for image registry test changes. Not selected: - e2e-gcp-ovn, e2e-aws-ovn-fips, e2e-metal-ipi-ovn-ipv6, serial, microshift: image policy admission is an API server feature that does not vary by cloud, FIPS, IP family, topology, or MicroShift. No material variant coverage beyond the selected job. - CSI, builds, jenkins, kubevirt, image-ecosystem, upgrade, two-node: changed file does not touch these domains. - vSphere: annotation ^$, never selected. Material axis: ImageVolume feature gate (test is tagged [FeatureGate:ImageVolume]). Cloud, network, and architecture are not material for admission rewriting.
