I don't think there's a reason to have a classic packaging page anymore, and it's making the navigation really long. Hatchlings's plugins, scikit-build-core 1.0, setuptools support for pyproject.toml, and old versions of Python going away mean there's not really a reason to use old configuration mechanisms expect for special legacy cases.
This is less pressing now with better organization, though I still don't think it adds anything and is not really maintained. We can add a redirect to the current simple packaging page in its place.
I'd like to work on this. I'll remove the classic-packaging page from the maintained docs and preserve its existing URL with a redirect to the current simple-packaging page, then run the documentation checks.
