🔍 Description

Adds an opt-in keepLocalSessionOnError option to signOut, so a failed "sign out of all devices" can be shown and retried instead of silently becoming a local-only sign-out.

What changed?

  • New keepLocalSessionOnError?: boolean on the SignOut options. When it's true and the remote logout fails with a network error or a 5xx, _signOut keeps the current session, doesn't emit SIGNED_OUT, and returns the error.
  • The default is unchanged: the current session is still cleared when the server can't be reached, as fix(auth): clear local session on signout failures #2504 made it.
  • 401, 403 and 404 are still treated as a completed sign-out, with or without the option.
  • The signOut TSDoc now says what happens when the server call fails, and has an example using the option.
  • 6 new tests in GoTrueClient.signOut.test.ts: the default with a 500, the option with a 500 and with a network error (including a retry that actually reaches the server), and 401/403/404 with the option.

Why was this change needed?

Since #2504, a global sign-out that fails remotely still clears the local session and fires SIGNED_OUT. Nothing was revoked on the server, so the other devices stay signed in. The tokens are gone too, so a second signOut() sends no request and returns error: null. An app with a "log out everywhere" button can't tell "revoked everywhere" from "revoked nowhere".

I didn't change the default for global because it's the default scope, so plain signOut() on a sign-out button would go back to leaving offline devices signed in (#2501). If you'd rather change the default for global instead, it's a one-line switch.

Closes #2779

📝 Additional notes

The new field sits on the existing SignOut options type, so I didn't add anything to sdk-compliance.yaml (only GoTrueClient.signOut is registered there). Happy to change the commit type to feat if you'd prefer, since it adds an option.

Since supabase#2504, a global or local signOut clears the current session and emits
SIGNED_OUT even when the remote logout fails with a network error or a 5xx.
For scope 'global' that means nothing was revoked, the other devices stay
signed in, and the call cannot be retried because the tokens are gone.

Add an opt-in keepLocalSessionOnError option. When set, a failed remote
logout keeps the current session, skips SIGNED_OUT and returns the error.
The default is unchanged, so offline sign-out still clears the device (supabase#2501).
401, 403 and 404 are still treated as a completed sign-out.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an option to preserve the local session when sign-out encounters network or server errors.
    • By default, local session data is still cleared when remote sign-out fails.
    • Sessions are cleared regardless of this option for authorization-related errors, including 401, 403, and 404 responses.
  • Documentation
    • Updated sign-out guidance to explain local-session behavior and the new option.

The sign-out API now accepts keepLocalSessionOnError. When enabled, the client retains the local session after remote sign-out errors other than 401, 403, or 404, allowing a retry. Without the option, the client clears the session after a 5xx response. Tests cover these outcomes, network errors, and successful retries.

Add a focused non-allowed 4xx sign-out test.

The existing tests cover 5xx and network failures, plus only the allowed 401/403/404 exceptions. They would not detect a regression that treats another 4xx response, such as 429, as a completed sign-out.

Document non-ignored 4xx failures.

When keepLocalSessionOnError is true, non-ignored errors such as 429 also preserve the local session, suppress SIGNED_OUT, and return the error. The TSDoc currently limits this behavior to network and 5xx failures. It also omits AuthSessionMissingError from the completed sign-out cases.
