fix(mocks): stop verification leaving setups on void-shaped members - #7688
Void-shaped wrappers (void, non-generic Task/ValueTask, ref-struct returns, .Set(value), indexer SetItem) register a setup in their constructor, so a bare mock.Log(Any()) allows the call in strict mode. mock.Send("x").WasCalled(...) goes through the same wrapper, so verifying added a setup too.
This is wider than the issue's title. It isn't async-specific, plain sync void fails the same way, and it wasn't only VerifyAll:
VerifyAll reported the setup as never invoked
strict mocks stopped rejecting the call that had just been verified
the new setup won over earlier ones, so Throws and Callback silently stopped applying
GetDiagnostics counted it
Fix
When a wrapper verifies, it withdraws its own setup if nothing was configured on it and it was never invoked. This runs before the verification, so a failed verification doesn't leave the setup behind. The wrapper also resets, so chaining a setup onto it afterwards registers a new one.
The engine side is an internal interface, same pattern as ITypeArgumentVerificationFactory, so no public API or generated code changes. Bare mock.Log(Any()) setups work as before.
Behaviour change
A stored bare wrapper can't be told apart from a fluent verification, so this now loses its setup:
varlog=mock.Log(Any());log.WasNeverCalled();// setup withdrawnsut.Run();// strict mock now throws
Calling log.Returns() first keeps it. Added to the docs. The same applies to a stored bare wrapper verified after ClearCalls(), since that resets its invoke count.
A call on another thread could still hit the temporary setup between the wrapper being created and verifying. That window already existed and isn't closed here.
Testing
35 new tests in Issue7684Tests: 24 fail without the fix, the other 11 guard behaviour that must not change. Removing each safety condition in turn (configured check, invoked check, both wrapper resets) fails the matching tests.
TUnit.Mocks.Tests passes on net8.0, net9.0 and net10.0
Logging, Http, SourceGenerator, Analyzers, InternalsAccess and PublicAPI tests pass on net10.0, with no snapshot changes
Not run locally: TUnit.Mocks.Aot.Tests (no reflection added)
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Verification of an unconfigured, never-invoked void mock call no longer leaves a setup for VerifyAll to report. Configured or invoked setups remain available for verification.
Verification documentation now clarifies that WasCalled and WasNeverCalled do not register setups and are ignored by VerifyAll.
Void-method setup guidance now explains that stored calls must be configured before invocation to be verified.
Void-shaped wrappers register a setup in their constructor so a bare
mock.Log(Any()) allows the call in strict mode. Verifying through one left
that setup behind: VerifyAll reported it as never invoked, strict mocks
accepted the verified call, and it shadowed earlier Throws/Callback setups.
Verification now withdraws the wrapper's setup when nothing was configured
on it and it was never invoked.
Fixes#7684
Void-call verification now removes eligible bare setups. Configured or invoked setups remain. Tests and documentation cover how verification interacts with setups and VerifyAll.

Summary
Setup eligibility and removal src/TUnit.Mocks/Setup/MethodSetup.cs, src/TUnit.Mocks/IBareSetupRemover.cs, src/TUnit.Mocks/MockEngine.cs
MethodSetup reports whether a setup is configured. MockEngine<T> removes a setup only when it is uninvoked, unconfigured, and present in the member setup list.
Verification attempts to remove the builder’s bare setup. The builder reference is cleared only when removal succeeds.
Behavior tests and documentation tests/TUnit.Mocks.Tests/Issue7684Tests.cs, docs/docs/writing-tests/mocking/setup.md, docs/docs/writing-tests/mocking/verification.md
Tests cover verification forms, setup retention, and later configuration. The documentation clarifies how verification relates to setups and VerifyAll.
Verification now removes stray setups on void-shaped members, which fixes the reported VerifyAll and strict-mode problems. Some edge paths lack tests, but nothing indicates a likely failure, so the change is mergeable with a small follow-up.

Thanks for using CodeRabbit! It's free for OSS, and your support helps us grow. If you like it, consider giving us a shout-out.
I’m a rabbit who checks each call, Bare setups leave when tests recall. Configured ones stay in their place, While VerifyAll checks the case. I twitch my nose and cheer the change!
The fix is sound and well scoped. I found no blocking issues.
What I checked
TryRemoveBareSetup takes the engine Lock, re-checks InvokeCount and IsConfigured inside it, and removes from the per-member list. It then sets _hasStaleSetups, so the snapshot rebuild paths pick up the removal.
Withdrawing the setup happens before MockCallVerification.Create, so a failed verification leaves nothing behind.
Resetting _builder (and _builderInitialized in VoidMockMethodCall) lets a later chained call register a fresh setup.
IBareSetupRemover is internal and reached by type test, so there is no public API change and no change to the generated code. Custom engines keep the old behaviour.
IsConfigured deliberately ignores RequiredState, which the engine stamps on setups registered inside a state scope.
The tests cover the safety conditions (configured, invoked, resets) and the wrapper shapes (void, Task, ref-struct, setter, indexer).
Non-blocking suggestions
Stored bare wrapper. Behaviour change: var log = mock.Log(Any()); log.WasNeverCalled(); now drops the setup, so a strict mock throws afterwards. This is documented in the PR, but the docs edit in setup.md doesn't state it. Add one sentence there, since this is the case that will surprise users.
Verification has a side effect. The design makes CreateVerification mutate engine state because the wrapper can't tell setup from verification. A cleaner long-term option is for the generator to emit separate setup and verify entry points, or to register the eager setup lazily (when the wrapper is discarded or the call is made). The current heuristic is a reasonable trade-off without a generator change, so I'd consider this follow-up work.
IsConfigured. It has to be kept in sync with every new field added to MethodSetup/RareState. A short comment next to RareState saying so would prevent a silent regression.
Duplicated logic. The remove-and-reset logic is duplicated between VoidMockMethodCallBase and VoidMockMethodCall. That's fine given the different fields, but a shared helper on the engine side could reduce drift.
Overall this looks good to merge. I did not run the tests myself.
[Medium impact] This PR appears safe to merge; no actionable issues were found.
Summary
Stops verification of void-shaped members from leaving an unwanted setup behind.
Verifying a void-shaped mock call removes its unused setup.
Acknowledged by thomhurst:
Verifying a stored bare wrapper before invocation removes its setup. The wrapper cannot be distinguished from a fluent verification; calling .Returns() first keeps it.
The same removal can happen after ClearCalls() resets the setup’s invocation count.
Another thread can still invoke the temporary setup before verification removes it. Closing that existing window is outside this change.

Fixes #7684
Problem
Void-shaped wrappers (
void, non-genericTask/ValueTask, ref-struct returns,.Set(value), indexerSetItem) register a setup in their constructor, so a baremock.Log(Any())allows the call in strict mode.mock.Send("x").WasCalled(...)goes through the same wrapper, so verifying added a setup too. This is wider than the issue's title. It isn't async-specific, plain sync
voidfails the same way, and it wasn't onlyVerifyAll:VerifyAllreported the setup as never invokedThrowsandCallbacksilently stopped applyingGetDiagnosticscounted itFix
When a wrapper verifies, it withdraws its own setup if nothing was configured on it and it was never invoked. This runs before the verification, so a failed verification doesn't leave the setup behind. The wrapper also resets, so chaining a setup onto it afterwards registers a new one.
The engine side is an internal interface, same pattern as
ITypeArgumentVerificationFactory, so no public API or generated code changes. Baremock.Log(Any())setups work as before.Behaviour change
A stored bare wrapper can't be told apart from a fluent verification, so this now loses its setup:
Calling
log.Returns()first keeps it. Added to the docs. The same applies to a stored bare wrapper verified afterClearCalls(), since that resets its invoke count.A call on another thread could still hit the temporary setup between the wrapper being created and verifying. That window already existed and isn't closed here.
Testing
Issue7684Tests: 24 fail without the fix, the other 11 guard behaviour that must not change. Removing each safety condition in turn (configured check, invoked check, both wrapper resets) fails the matching tests.TUnit.Mocks.Testspasses on net8.0, net9.0 and net10.0TUnit.Mocks.Aot.Tests(no reflection added)Summary by CodeRabbit
