After #32587, before #32588.

Summary

To be installed, an app needs its own keys, a manifest signed for the exact address Ghost reads it from, and a way to know it will pass before Ghost tries. This adds @tryghost/app-sdk/tooling for all three, and moves Ghost's E2E fixture app onto it, so Ghost's own tests sign and answer the way apps do. The ghost-app command on top of it is #32588.

What's changed

checkApp reads an app the way Ghost does, challenge included, and fails with Ghost's own codes. Hello world, using the library from a packed build of the stack at 2906c58:

Tried Result
signProject for hello-world.localhost:5288 Signed for that address
checkApp on the running app Passes, challenge answered
checkApp on the same manifest from ?copy=1 APP_MANIFEST_URL_MISMATCH
checkApp with nothing running APP_MANIFEST_UNREACHABLE

Ghost's apps E2E specs run against the fixture, now on the SDK. 279 unit tests, at the package's 100% line threshold. checkApp's cases moved from the CLI's tests into check.test.ts and call it directly.

Blast radius

Two-way door. Merging publishes an alpha with the /tooling entry point. If it's wrong, apps sign manifests Ghost refuses, or checkApp passes one Ghost would refuse. Ghost's apps E2E specs run on the fixture, so they'd catch the first.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The SDK adds Node tooling to create and read signing keys, sign app manifests, and check signed manifests and app origins. The tooling is available through a new package entry point and includes validation, size limits, redirects, and challenge handling. Tests cover key management, signing, checking, package exports, and bundle dependencies. The E2E fixture now uses the SDK’s signing and backend challenge APIs.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: manifest signing tooling added to the app SDK. The raw summary shows a new tooling entry point with signAppManifest and signProject, which matches the title. The title is short and specific, so it passes.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description states the purpose of the change: apps need keys, signed manifests for an exact address, and a check before Ghost installs them. It adds @tryghost/app-sdk/tooling and moves the E2E fixture app onto it, which matches the raw summary. It also gives test results, a blast-radius note, and a link to the issue. The description is related and detailed, so it passes.

Full details: New Files Are Typescript

Explanation

The pull request adds only TypeScript source and test files. The authoritative diff lists seven added files, all with .ts extensions, and no added .js, .jsx, .cjs, or .mjs files. Modified files do not trigger this check.

Full details: Tooling Ownership

Explanation

All changed paths stay with their owners. The new manifest, key, Git, signing, and checking code is app-domain behavior under packages/app-sdk/src/tooling, with shared SDK helpers under src/shared, local configuration in vite.config.ts, and tests beside the package. The package exports and builds the Node tooling entry point, and its bundle and packed-package tests check Node builtins, dependency boundaries, exports, and installed-package use. The fixture and its dependency/TypeScript changes remain in e2e, beside the E2E tests; the E2E scripts already build the SDK before use. No repository-wide tools, ghost, or new scripts placement was introduced, and the lockfile change matches the removed E2E dependency.

Full details: Type-Safe Boundaries

Explanation

The PR still introduces hand-written boundary types that duplicate Zod-described shapes. packages/app-sdk/src/tooling/types.ts:12-27 defines ManifestSource and AppManifest with the same manifest fields described by AppManifestSchema in packages/app-contracts/src/manifest/schema.ts:49-79,119-125. packages/app-sdk/src/tooling/keys.ts:34-39 defines PublicKeyJwk, duplicating the z.infer<typeof publicKeyField> type in packages/app-contracts/src/manifest/keys.ts:17-36. These files are introduced by the PR.

Resolution

Remove the duplicate manifest and public-key interfaces. Reuse the inferred AppManifest type from AppManifestSchema, derive ManifestSource with Pick or Omit, and reuse the inferred public-key type from publicKeyField or its exported PublicKeyJwk type.

@tryghost/app-sdk/tooling creates an app's keys, signs ghost-app.json for
the exact address Ghost reads it from, and checks an app the way Ghost
does, challenge included. Ghost's E2E fixture app moves onto the SDK, so
Ghost's own tests sign and answer the way apps do.

Bound the body read with the deadline when the fetch is injected.

checkApp sets AbortSignal.timeout(TIMEOUT_MS) on each request. It does not bound the body read. readBytes awaits reader.read() with no timer and no abort listener. If an injected fetch returns a body that does not error when its signal aborts, the read never settles and checkApp stays pending past TIMEOUT_MS. Race the read against the signal, or cancel the reader when the signal aborts.

Add an export-list assertion for the tooling declaration.

The ['tooling', undefined] row at packages/app-sdk/test/bundle.test.ts:224 skips the export comparison. For this row, the test checks only that the generated tooling.d.ts has no TypeScript diagnostics. A declaration that omits createKeys or readSigningKeys still passes. Both functions are documented public API and are exported from src/tooling/index.ts. No packed-package test imports them. The USAGE source in packages/app-sdk/test/package.test.ts imports only checkApp and signProject, and the entry checks in that file require only a non-empty export list.

Pass the exact export list of the generated tooling declaration in place of undefined. The list must match that declaration, including any type exports. Alternatively, import createKeys and readSigningKeys in the packed USAGE source so the packed-package check covers them.

Add negative redirect tests for port changes and HTTPS-to-HTTP downgrades.

The checkApp redirect tests cover the accepted HTTP-to-HTTPS case, a cross-host redirect, and a self-redirect. A check that compares only hostnames would pass all of them. Such a check would follow a redirect to http://localhost:8080 and a redirect from https://localhost to http://localhost. The current staysOnHost rejects both with APP_MANIFEST_REDIRECTED before any further request, so these cases can be covered directly.

Add a test for a stalled successful manifest body.

The test at lines 265-290 checks only that the fetch calls share one signal. A signal that never aborts would also pass. No test reads a successful manifest body that stalls. The stalls case at lines 292-303 covers a redirect body, which the code never reads.

Add a case where the manifest response body never ends and the body errors when init.signal aborts. Make the fake fetch tie the body to that signal. Assert the resolved result: success is false and code is 'APP_MANIFEST_UNREACHABLE'. The read ends at the TIMEOUT_MS deadline, so the test takes about that long unless timers are controlled.

Add a success test for three redirects.

The redirect tests never follow three redirects to success. The deepest success case follows two. A guard that rejects the third valid redirect would still pass the current suite. The self-redirect case checks only the error message, so it does not detect an early rejection either.

Cover the UTF-8 byte count in the storedSize size test.

The size test uses only ASCII manifest content. For that content, a storedSize that returned the JavaScript string length would give the same result as the UTF-8 byte count. The test would still pass, so a regression to string length would go unnoticed. The production code counts bytes correctly.

Add a manifest case that includes a multi-byte field, such as an accented or emoji description. Keep JSON.stringify(manifest).length at or below LIMIT, and assert that storedSize of that manifest is greater than LIMIT. That pair of assertions fails when the implementation counts characters instead of bytes.

Remove the bin.js entry from the README build list.

The README says build/ contains bin.js. This PR's build does not emit that file. The Vite library entries are index, backend, and tooling. The package exports map has no bin entry and no bin field. A reader who looks for build/bin.js after pnpm build will not find it. Delete the bin.js clause, or move it to the PR that adds the ghost-app CLI.

Format symbol and null-prototype rejections without template interpolation.

describeFetchError interpolates the rejection fields into template literals. A symbol throws a TypeError when interpolated. A null-prototype object also throws when String() converts it, because it has no toString or valueOf.

The following rejection values throw:

  • A symbol cause.code, because a symbol is always truthy.
  • A symbol cause.message when cause.code is nullish.
  • A symbol message when a reason is present.
  • A null-prototype object with no string message and no reason.

A symbol message without a reason, and a top-level symbol, do not throw. The TypeError escapes the fetchOnce catch, and checkApp rethrows it. The call rejects instead of returning the mapped failed result. This requires an injected fetch that rejects with such values.

Skip the git-double test on Windows, or give the stub a Windows executable name.

On Windows, execFile('git', ...) skips the extensionless #!/bin/sh stub and runs a later git.exe from PATH. The calls file is then never written, so the test fails at readFile. Add it.skipIf(process.platform === 'win32') to this test, as the same file does at line 82.

Remove the duplicate manifest and public-key interfaces. Reuse the authoritative

Changes that affect a publishable `tryghost/*` package under `koenig/` or
`packages/`, including changes to catalog entries consumed by that package, need
a changeset so the package receives an appropriate version and changelog entry:

### Changeset lane

Everything else publishable (`koenig/*`, `packages/*`) is versioned in the repo
by `pnpm version -r` from the release intents in `.changeset/`, as part of the
weekly Ghost release, and published from the release tag by
`publish-packages.yml`. A pull request that changes one of these packages must
add an intent with `pnpm change`; CI fails otherwise. Graduating a continuous
package means removing its manifest entry and adding an intent.

156-177: The asks git once for both keys test still fails on Windows.

An earlier review comment on this test reported the same problem, and the code has not changed.

  • The stub is an extensionless #!/bin/sh file, named git. On Windows, execFile('git', ...) does not run it, so calls is never written and readFile fails.
  • vi.stubEnv('PATH', ${bin}:${process.env.PATH}) joins entries with :. Windows uses ;, so the PATH entry is also malformed.

Add it.skipIf(process.platform === 'win32'), as the test at Line 82 does. The germanGit helper (Line 211) uses the same stub and : separator, so it needs the same guard if Windows runners are supported.

Key files and variables were already checked, but a key passed straight to
signAppManifest wasn't, so a pasted JWK pairing one key's d with another's
x signed a manifest Ghost refuses. The README no longer lists bin.js,
which only the CLI adds.

252-257: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Guard the read-only directory test and restore permissions in finally.

This test relies on chmod 0o500 to force EACCES. That does not hold in two cases:

  • Windows ignores POSIX permission bits.
  • A root user, such as in many CI containers, can write to a 0o500 directory.

In both cases createKeys succeeds and the rejects.toThrow(/EACCES/) assertion fails.

The permission restore on Line 256 also runs only if the assertion passes. If the assertion fails, the directory stays 0o500. The rm call in the afterEach cleanup may then fail to delete its contents, which leaves a stale temp directory. The testing guideline requires that "Cleanup belongs in suite hooks that still run when an assertion fails."

Proposed fix

-  it('reports a key it could not write', async () => {
+ // Windows ignores the mode, and root can write to a read-only directory.
+  it.skipIf(process.platform === 'win32' || process.getuid?.() === 0)(
+ 'reports a key it could not write',
+    async () => {
     await mkdir(join(root, '.ghost-app/development'), { recursive: true });
     await chmod(join(root, '.ghost-app/development'), 0o500);
-    await expect(createKeys({ root, mode: 'development' })).rejects.toThrow(/EACCES/);
-    await chmod(join(root, '.ghost-app/development'), 0o700);
-  });
+    try {
+      await expect(createKeys({ root, mode: 'development' })).rejects.toThrow(/EACCES/);
+    } finally {
+      await chmod(join(root, '.ghost-app/development'), 0o700);
+    }
+    },
+  );

As per coding guidelines: "Cleanup belongs in suite hooks that still run when an assertion fails." and "Keep time, randomness, environment, and ordering deterministic."

Update the “reports a key it could not write” test to skip on Windows and when
running as root, where chmod cannot reliably produce EACCES. Put the permission
restoration in a finally block so it runs even if the assertion fails,
preserving cleanup for the test’s temporary directory.

## Formatting

Source formatting is owned by [Oxfmt](https://oxc.rs/docs/guide/usage/formatter),
configured in the root `.oxfmtrc.json`: Oxfmt defaults plus single quotes, with
embedded-language formatting disabled so string contents are never rewritten.
CI rejects unformatted code, and the pre-commit hook formats staged files
automatically, so there is usually nothing to do. To format manually:

```bash
pnpm format path/to/file.ts
```

packages/app-sdk/test/tooling.test.ts: 1

156-177: Skip the shell-script git stubs on Windows.

The test at Line 156 and the germanGit helper at Line 211 write an extensionless #!/bin/sh file named git into a temp bin directory. They then prepend that directory to PATH with a : separator. On Windows, execFile('git', ...) does not run an extensionless script. The : separator also breaks the PATH list, because Windows uses ;. The real git.exe runs instead, so the calls file is never written. The stubbed exit codes and German messages are never produced either. The tests at Lines 222 and 232 therefore fail on Windows. The file already guards Windows-specific behavior at Lines 46 and 82, so the same guard fits here.

This repeats the existing review comment on Lines 162-167. The same root cause also affects the germanGit tests. Apply it.skipIf(process.platform === 'win32') to the Line 156 test and the two tests at Lines 222 and 232.

Also applies to: 209-240
