Added a backend entry point to the app SDK - #32587
Since #32336, Ghost only installs an app whose backend answers its challenge, and the code that answers it was private, so no app outside this repo could be installed. This adds @tryghost/app-sdk/backend, built on web standards so it runs on Workers, Node, Bun and Deno.

participant App as App backend (withGhostApp)
Ghost->>App: POST /.well-known/ghost-app/challenge {purpose, origin, nonce}
App-->>Ghost: 200 {signature}, signed with the backend key
Note over App: Every other request goes to the app's own fetch
handleChallenge, allowFraming and serveManifest are exported too, for frameworks that route requests themselves. A client for calling the Admin API from a backend waits for the first app that needs one (see BER-4014). Framing is opt-in: withGhostApp only sets frame-ancestors when given adminOrigins.

Blast radius
Two-way door. Merging publishes the next @tryghost/app-sdk alpha with a new /backend entry point; the browser entry is unchanged. If it's wrong, apps on the alpha fail Ghost's challenge and can't be installed or opened.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The app SDK adds a backend entry point with helpers for Ghost challenge requests, signed-manifest responses, and framing policies. It adds shared utilities for bounded request-body reading and origin validation. Package exports and build configuration now cover page and backend entry points. Tests check the backend APIs, package outputs, imports, and declarations. The README describes backend setup and the separate entry points.

Explanation
The title names the main change: a new backend entry point (@tryghost/app-sdk/backend) for the app SDK. The raw summary confirms that this entry point, with withGhostApp, handleChallenge, allowFraming and serveManifest, is the core of the changeset. The title is short, specific, and free of file lists or vague terms.
Full details: Tooling Ownership
Explanation
No tooling ownership problem was introduced. The diff adds no path under scripts/ or tools/. The .oxlintrc.json override is correctly kept at the repository root; the Oxlint guidance documents that file as the place for workspace scopes. packages/app-sdk/vite.config.ts, package tests, and package scripts remain beside their owning published package, which is an allowed local configuration boundary. No changed caller or shipped path requires relocation.

Full details: Type-Safe Boundaries
Explanation
The prior type-safety findings remain in the reviewed PR. packages/app-sdk/src/shared/manifest.ts:8-12 hand-writes SignedManifest, duplicating the Zod shape at packages/app-contracts/src/identity/signed-manifest.ts:18-22. The new serveManifest path serializes object input directly at packages/app-sdk/src/backend/manifest.ts:12-13 without runtime validation. The new importPrivateKey path parses backend-key JSON and uses an unchecked as BackendJwk cast at packages/app-sdk/src/backend/challenge.ts:78-90 before passing data to WebCrypto. These files are PR-added, so the findings are PR-causal.
Resolution
Define one shared signed-manifest Zod schema and derive SignedManifest with z.infer. Validate object-form input in serveManifest before serialization. Replace the as BackendJwk cast with typed narrowing or a Zod schema for the parsed private Ed25519 JWK, then pass only validated data to WebCrypto.

Add a test that makes a second client request after token expiry.
The test calls the Admin API with a token for each request makes only one request, so it cannot show that each request gets its own token. The is valid for 5 minutes test calls createAdminApiToken directly and does not go through createAdminApiClient. A client that mints its token once and reuses it would still pass the current tests. The current client already mints a token per request, so this test guards behavior that is correct today.
Send a second request six minutes after the first, then assert that its Authorization token differs from the first.
Suggested test
it('calls the Admin API with a token for each request', async () => {
const { api, requests } = client();
await api.fetch('/posts/?limit=5', {
headers: { authorization: 'Basic nope', 'x-custom': '1' },
});
const [request] = requests;
expect(request?.url).toBe('https://site.example/ghost/api/admin/posts/?limit=5');
expect(request?.headers.get('x-custom')).toBe('1');
const [scheme, token] = request?.headers.get('authorization')?.split(' ') ?? [];

Add a client-level test using the existing `client()` helper that makes a
request, advances time past the five-minute token lifetime, and makes a second
request. Assert that the second Authorization token differs from the first and
reflects the later issue time; use fake timers with cleanup in a `finally`
block.
Add a test that checks the bytes of a multi-chunk body.
The readBytes tests cover only oversized bodies, and they assert undefined. No test checks the returned bytes for an in-limit body that arrives in several chunks. The challenge tests send string bodies, which arrive as one chunk. A regression that reverses the chunk order or copies each chunk at offset zero would still pass the suite.
Suggested test
const streamed = new Response(unCancellable(new Uint8Array(1024)));

The three inline findings are fixed (b0de60e, ebd2e2a, 146f2bb). These items from the review body aren't changing in this PR:
The two test nitpicks (a second request after the token expires, and checking the bytes of a multi-chunk body): the review notes that both describe behaviour that's already correct. The client mints a token on every fetch, and the multi-chunk path runs under the existing body tests at the 100% line threshold. I'd rather not add tests that only restate them.
The "Type-Safe Boundaries" pre-merge check: a shared Zod schema for signed manifests would be a refactor of its own, across the SDK and app-contracts, so it's out of scope for this stack.

Reject origin hostnames that the CSP host grammar cannot express.
allowFraming rejects IPv6 literals because a frame-ancestors host cannot name them. The same rule applies to any hostname character outside letters, digits, - and .. parseOrigin accepts http://ghost_admin:2368 because the WHATWG URL parser allows underscores in hosts. The helper then writes frame-ancestors http://ghost_admin:2368. A browser can ignore that source under the CSP host grammar. The Admin origin then cannot frame the app, and the helper raises no error.

On the outside-diff finding about JsonWebKey in challenge.ts: fixed in b3678a3. I confirmed the problem first. Type-checking the built backend.d.ts against lib: es2022 with types: ['node'] fails with Cannot find name 'JsonWebKey'.
BackendKey now uses BackendJwk, a type alias owned by the package with the standard JWK members, as suggested. A DOM JsonWebKey, Node's webcrypto.JsonWebKey or a jose JWK all pass for it. The packed-package test now also type-checks a Node backend against /backend without the DOM library, under both node and bundler resolution. It fails on the previous code and passes now.

Check the backend outputs in the freshness guard.
The guard at lines 122-130 compares only build/index.js, build/index.d.ts, and dist/app-sdk.js with the fresh build. It does not compare build/backend.js or build/backend.d.ts. The packed tarball includes the workspace build/ as it exists on disk. If build/backend.d.ts is stale, the new Node /backend type check can pass against the old declaration, even though the source declaration changed.

Review comment at @packages/app-sdk/test/package.test.ts at line 122:
The freshness guard in the loop over `[file, fresh]` omits the backend build
outputs. Add `build/backend.js` and `build/backend.d.ts` to the same comparison
list, using the corresponding files from `built.package`, so stale backend
artifacts fail the freshness check.

Replace the unchecked BackendJwk cast with a schema.
importPrivateKey casts the JSON.parse result to BackendJwk before any check. The four fields used by the import are checked afterward, so no unvalidated value reaches importKey. The cast still bypasses the boundary-validation rule for this secret input. Parse the value with a Zod schema, and keep it unknown until it passes.

Everything else publishable (`koenig/*`, `packages/*`) is versioned in the repo
by `pnpm version -r` from the release intents in `.changeset/`, as part of the
weekly Ghost release, and published from the release tag by
`publish-packages.yml`. A pull request that changes one of these packages must
add an intent with `pnpm change`; CI fails otherwise. Graduating a continuous
package means removing its manifest entry and adding an intent.

Freshness guard (outside the diff): fixed in 73afb3b. Rather than add the backend files to the list, the guard now checks every file the fresh package build makes, except source maps, which name the folder they were built into. The tooling and Vite entry points in the later PRs are covered too. Tested by appending to build/backend.d.ts: the test now fails with build/backend.d.ts isn't what the source builds to now.
Zod schema for the backend key (nitpick): not changing this. importPrivateKey checks kty, crv, x and d before passing only those four fields to importKey, so nothing unchecked reaches WebCrypto. A schema would restate the same four checks.

## Formatting
Source formatting is owned by [Oxfmt](https://oxc.rs/docs/guide/usage/formatter),
configured in the root `.oxfmtrc.json`: Oxfmt defaults plus single quotes, with
embedded-language formatting disabled so string contents are never rewritten.
CI rejects unformatted code, and the pre-commit hook formats staged files
automatically, so there is usually nothing to do. To format manually:
```bash
pnpm format path/to/file.ts
## Record package release intent
A package `README.md` is included when the package is published, so changing it
requires a release. Repository-only Markdown such as `AGENTS.md`,
changelogs, and files under a package's `docs/` directory does not.
Fresh backend declarations:test/package.test.ts compares every file in build/ except source maps, backend.d.ts included, with a fresh build, and fails on any difference.
The README: it describes the origin check as the code does: request.url's origin, or origin behind a proxy, and never a request header. Framing is opt-in, since withGhostApp only calls allowFraming when given adminOrigins, and the README says this only covers responses that reach fetch.
The DocsBot help chat in Admin was an experiment, and the support
requests endpoint only existed so its support form could hand a chat off
This removes the help chat and its `docsbot` config, the support request
form, and the `/support_requests` Admin API endpoint with its service
and rate limit.
The missing-events sweep replays Mailgun events that Ghost has already
stored, and every replay recounts the affected email and member totals
even when nothing changed. Typically around 97% of sweep runs store no
new events, yet their recounts make up about 70% of the time the sweep
spends aggregating, mostly on member stats.
- Skipped the sweep's recount when a run stores no new opens, deliveries
or permanent failures
- Other passes keep their existing aggregation behaviour, and a run that
hits an error still recounts everything it touched
- Fixed the sweep never updating an email's open count for opens it
recovered, because it aggregated without recounting opens
- Saved a permanent failure's record before setting `failed_at`, so a
failed save leaves the event new on replay instead of stored but never
counted
- Flushed batched recipient updates when an event fails and cleared the
queue after a failed flush, so a later run no longer writes another
run's updates and counts them as its own
Trade-off: if a fetch-latest run stores new events and then its final recount fails,
replaying those events in fetch-missing no longer triggers a recount, so those email and
member totals stay stale until a later recount covers them.
db68731 removes the Admin API client, which nothing used (see BER-4014), and the two Vite plugins that kept Node builtins out of the page and backend. In their place: node: imports are external in the package build, the bundle tests fail if the page or backend reaches one, and oxlint's unicorn/prefer-node-protocol requires the prefix.
Add adminOrigins to the Worker example, and state the asset setting it depends on.
The example leaves app pages frameable by any site in a default Worker deployment. Without adminOrigins, withGhostApp sets no frame-ancestors policy. On Workers, static assets are served without running the Worker unless assets.run_worker_first is set. Those pages therefore receive no policy at all. A publisher who opens a site that frames the app can then be exposed. That site can supply its own start context, answer fetch, and receive what the publisher types into the page. The page's origin check only accepts the framing window, so it does not stop that site.
Add the Admin origin to the example. Use assets.run_worker_first so that fetch receives asset requests:
### Use TypeScript
Use your judgement when deciding whether to convert existing files. A small,
unrelated change may not justify a migration. When working substantially in an
area, take the opportunity to migrate it where feasible. Prefer converting a
coherent module or directory together, with its tests, rather than leaving a
mixture of JavaScript and TypeScript. Preserve the behavior of callers that
have not yet migrated.
On adding adminOrigins and assets.run_worker_first to the Worker example in the README: declining. Framing is deliberately opt-in, so the example leaves it out. Most apps can't list every Admin origin they're installed on, and the Apps permissions work is what will lock framing down. The README's "Who can frame the page" section explains the risk, and how to opt in with adminOrigins or allowFraming, for apps that can. The "adminOrigins only reaches responses fetch makes" note covers run_worker_first.
@tryghost/app-sdk/backend lets an app outside this repo answer Ghost's
challenge: withGhostApp({ backendKey, fetch }) answers it and passes every
other request on, and handleChallenge, allowFraming and serveManifest are
there for frameworks that route requests themselves. It's built on web
standards, so it runs on Workers, Node, Bun and Deno.
Vite replaces a builtin imported without node: with an empty stub. The
contracts are inlined into the page and backend bundles, so a bare import
there would ship a stub without failing any test. The README also listed
@quilted/threads as the only dependency, which the backend's jose and zod
no longer make true.
An app's whole backend can be one call:
